O.K, first off let me say that on the whole I think that FM2005 is a great game. But...the seemingly (at times) arbitrary relationship between the stats displayed for a player and how they play is something I really feel SI need to work on.

Example. I am currently at Plymouth. I brought in two strikers, both with finishing 18 and 19 respectively. None of 'em can finish for sh*te. After eight months into the season and much banging of my head against the wall I gave a run to one of the ressies. Finishing stat 11. Bangs in goals game after game. Same tactic and nothing in the hidden stats to indicate that this should be the case. Nothing else evident in morale, fitness etc. etc. I've had the same problem with defenders. Tackling stats of 18-20 and can't tackle.This should not happen and is a major problem for a game which is based upon a database IMO.

I just feel that If the stats don't actually mean anything in real terms the whole thing then comes down to a bit of trial and error. Keep buying players and in the end one of 'em is bound to be good.
This is not a new problem in the series either. Nothing evident pointed to Nikiforenko for example being superman in 01/02. Many other examples are in evidence. I just feel that SI REALLY need to look at this for 2006.

tecnical attribute can't just he is a good player or not. you may have tackling 18 or 19 for a defender but <5 for his positioning or poor physical attribute. he is still crap

player like rooney may be low finishing but he have good overall attribute. he score 55 goals for me in a season

Yeah, finishing isnt the only attribute for finishing (sounds stupid, i know) Composure is very important too, and other stats too.

If you want a good finisher, get Sam Parkin. He can score in any level. Trust me. He scored a hat-trick against Barcelona.

post the individual players here if you like, im liable to bet he has either better composure, anticipation, technique or long shots. If not then i'd be surprised, of course i expect you've already checked the 'consistency' and 'important matches' hidden stats

I understand that, but it doesn't change the fact that the guys have almost perfect finishing stats as well as good composure etc. and yet have f*ck all percentage of their shots on target.

Yeah, I'm aware of that, but as I mentioned, all of the required stats are there. Composure for example is a 17 for one of the mentioned players. the stats do not reflect the performance and that makes it impossible to judge whether a certain striker is better to buy than another.

Check the .jpg below and see if you can tell me why player B can put the ball in the net and player 'A' can't get a shot on target. It's the same story for the 'hiddens' and player 'A' has both better current and potential ability.

probably a mix of the stats, maybe his personality works better with the rest of the team. Despite what you might think, i doubt there is any 'hidden' agenda to make some players better than others.

The hiddens I was refering to were the hidden stats. I do not think that SI have some hidden agenda to make some players better or anything like that.
It can't be a combination of stats as they are ALL better for player 'A' (hidden and visible). As for his personaliity working better with the team, thats a bit flimsy Tom and as there is nothing visible to know that and no data corresponding to it. It again makes it a random thing at times buying a player who will score more. Pot luck. I'm not saying it happens all the time or anything, but it happens enough to be a bit irritating and it is a flaw, end of.

Off the ball is very important. What good are finishing stats if the player is never in a good position to score?

O.K last post for me in this thread and then I'm givin up the ghost as it were.

Deep breath...It's not training as all of my strikers go through the same schedules. Its not ball control, composure, juggling, archery or any other stat as the player who isnt scoring has better stats across the board, especially the relavent ones such as composure and finishing( see .jpg in above post). It's not positioning as I'm watching the games and looking at the stats and the guy who's not scoring is getting in good positions and getting plenty of shots away but just not hitting the target. He has finishing 18 and he's not hitting the target. The other guy has 11 for finishing and he is and is scoring goals. Somethings wrong with that in my opinion.

You guys are of course entitled to your opinions, but I feel that it is something that needs work. I'll still buy 2006 regardless though as I've been hopelessly addicted to the damn thing since 00/01 anyway .
