Adding Ball spin on shots

How in the world do you add ballspin to any shot, penalty kicks, free kicks, kicks in the middle of gameplay. I know the buttons and try to use them but the ball still goes straight? What do i have to do to add proper ball spin to any shot or lob? Im clueless, please help me, Thanks
