Alex set for mystery club

Brazilian giants Santos have revealed that much sought-after defender Alex is on the verge of signing for a top European club.
The imposing central defender reportedly attracted a £4.8 million bid from Liga champions Real Madrid last month, but Santos president Marcelo Teixeira has stated that Alex will not be joining the lexicon of talent already at Madrid.
However, the club have confirmed that the talented defender will be moving in July and that the deal represents an attractive proposition for both club and player.
''It is a very good proposal that is on the table for negotiation,'' confirmed Teixeira. ''It is for five years and with a top European club.''
Santos coach Emerson Leao, although reluctant to part with his most valued asset, accepts that a sale is paramount in balancing the club finances.
''The Santos board have discussed the future of some players, but that is inevitable,'' conceded Leao.
Although the identity of the purchasing club remains a mystery, the strongest indications suggest a move to Spain remains Alex's likeliest destination.
Top sides Valencia and Barcelona continue to be strongly linked with the player and, previously, moves to Bayer Leverkusen and Milan have been mooted.
