Allowing the ball to run on

I'm playing WE7I:J now after playing a lot of WE6 and PES3 on the PS2, and I'm finding it hard to let the ball run on when a lofted through ball is played (L1 + triangle). It seemed easier in previous versions to hold R1 + R2, and the forward would run under your control rather than following the ball, so he'd effectively let the ball run into space for a better strike.

But now it seems that R1 + R2 is less effective in these situations, and my forward always seems to want to control the ball when it gets close (which inevitably slows him down horribly, giving a defender time to get a tackle in).

Has anyone else noticed this, or am I imagining things?

Super cancel _is_ R1 + R2, right?
That's what I'm using, and I can't get it to work with lofted through-balls. I'm pretty sure I was able to do this in WE6 and PES. And it seems to work better in WE7I:J for regular through balls. In fact a few times with regular triangle balls I've managed to make my guy run over the ball entirely and leave it behind - most embarrasing, but I guess it does happen in the real game from time to time.

It's really annoying when your forward is four yards ahead of the last defender, one-on-one with keeper, and he has to take two touches to bring the ball under control before he can make any forward progress again. Of course, by that time the defender has tackled back.
