Emerson? There's no way he is better than Totti.
Emerson gets injured a lot and doesn't compare to Totti. In a season with Roma, Totti scored 32 goals for me, Emerson 8 goals. I played both in the midfield too.

If you are looking for a good Central Defensive Midfielder then please give a try to Cameroon player MARC VIVIEN-FOE. He is a decent player with the most important stats (tackling, positoning, marking, heading strenght, stamina and determination above all) reaching 20 ( if not - he'll improve them).He is not the youngest of guys around yet he won't let you down. At the start of the game he plays for Lyon - French 1st division side, but he is willing to move to a other club.
I know that those 'visible' stats do not prove the player will perform well, but at least they indicate that he might be useful.
If, for some reason, he will decide not to join yor club you can try with following players( also central DM's):
Nicky Butt - ManU, obvoiusly
Assane N'Diaye - Shakhtar ( I also recommend a defender Isaak
Okoronkwo )
Radoslaw Kaluzny - Cottbus (German 1st Bundesliga)
Josep Guardiola - free transfer (quite old)

Personally, I concieve a central defensive midfielder as the most important figure in my tactics, so it is crucial for me to get a good player for this position. This is the reason why I've tested plenty of players and you can rely on those guys I've just mentioned. Still, I believe the best sollution is to search for players on your own. It's real fun!

Yes, Totti takes over when he is given a free role.
Edgar Davids is my favorite DM, but expensive.
Marcel Deseilly can usually be bought for 6 million pounds and also excels at DM.

Davids is the only DM in the game that can compare to Patrick Viera, buy him. Actually in my opinion he is much better than Viera because he isn't as erratic with challenges.

I signed Ivan Gattuso for my Man Utd. side as cover for the aging Roy Keane. He's pretty good and consistent.
If u are looking for a defensive midfielder for the defensive duties only then both foe and ipswitch`s matthew holland will do an excellent job. If u want your defensive midfielder to have some attacking duties as well then try to get steven gerrard from liverpool, he`s not as good as veira, but he`ll do the job for u. Davids is also great.

I once had Anders Svensson score 38 goals as a midfielder. Sergey Nikiforenko also is a midfielder and if you look at the screen shots in the other thread you'll see he has passed that limit by far.
