Am I wasting life on video games?

I play video games. I have been playing for the past one year. I would say I used to play maybe 3- 4 hours a day. Now maybe only 1-2. Ever time I do, my Parents always say, "Turn that damned thing off, your frying your brain and wasting your life!" Am I? Is it really a waste? It is fun isn't it? I'm wondering if I should stop. Or maybe I should just play less. What should my comeback be to them if they say that to me? I was wondering if I could get other peoples opinion on the subject. It would help me and be very interesting. If you do, thanks

I'm a gamer for more then 10 years now, and can't say I wasted my time. It was the same with my parents, also. That's normal... But if you play games and do nothing else (like going out with friends etc.) then you have a problem. I play cause I like it, I can rest and enjoy in good games.

There are many advantages in playing games, you can educate yourself in a fan way if you play historically accurate games. I did, and big part of my english language I learn from video games. But as side effect I must wear glasses now, but only when on PC (its small diopter).

I dont think you should stop if you enjoy it. Some peoples like to drink, smoke, get wasted or spent whole day in a bar, so you're not doing anything wicked.

Just dont get yourself to addictive. ;) BTW, how old are you?

Also, you'll see over the time, as you're getting older, that you'll have much less time for gaming. I'm a student and plus that have a side job from time to time, so can't play as much as I would like to, but when I do, its enjoying! ;)

Cheers!

The thing about life is when you start asking the questions, it means deep down inside you already know the answers. And what someone else thinks about this or that isn't relevent to what you need to do.

Now, if you're concerned that you're wasting your life, then one option is to spend an equal amount of time each day doing something redeeming... because let's face it, gaming IS pretty much a big time-waster, lol. Volunteer at a homeless shelter. Learn a martial art. Take an online course. Me, I play the piano.

i am 27 years old, i work as a software engineer. i studied computer engineering cos i liked to play PC and vedio games right from childhood and pc games were way better than vedio :)

i play games all the time..even after work i make sure i put some hours in fifa.

"there were two colleagues in office, the first colleague was complaining the other that he has two sons, both of them play tennis all the time and he had to give them allowances to buy tennis ball. its like almost they put all their allowances in buying tennis ball etc etc. the second colleague then ask him a question back - what would you rather have ur sons do? smoke and mingle with the boys in alleys or put their time in sports/games. From that day on the first never ever complained abt his sons playing"

excel in ur report card & play games. no one will say a thing

what your parents dont understand is video gaming is something you enjoy, you are a child of the digital world & its what you like to do.

just like when they were kids they enjoyed the things they did that their parents didnt like them doing because when their parents were kids they didnt have what you your parents had just like your parents didnt have what you have.

the world is a new place & its dangerous, its not like it used to be, truthfully id rather my daughter home safe playing video games then out in a world going wild where anything can happen to her in the blink of an eye.

times have changed & your parent simply have not adapted to it.

Ha-ha! Yes, things have changed. Kids used to go outside and play sports, now they sit around and play video games and watch their asses expand. Which explains why 40% of Americans are now obese, and why that number keeps going up each year. It's a different world alright. Not sure if I'd call it more dangerous though, just more fat and disgusting, lol.

sounds like everything that comes out of your mouth lately is idiotic, what happened to you ?

im gonna change your name to ultraepl3.

kids do go outside & play & play sports in america from the age of 5 where kids are good when it comes to behaving & doing what they are told, when they get to an age where they can make decisions for themselves, if mine choose to play games at home rather than be in the park full of crackheads & gangstas, id prefer home playing games.

what you know about americans & obesity ?

you think its from sitting around playing video games ?

how ignorant can you be bro, we like fried greasy food here, we aint like you full of self, scrawny ass europeans who think being skin & bones is where its at, & then cry about it if we gain a pound.

i love how you think fat people are disgusting, i guess cause they are obese they arent good people, just like you claim to be.

as far as the world not being dangerous, i dont know exactly where you are from, but i promise you if you came to where i live now or where i grew up which is worse as soon as someone heard you speak w/ some silly accent you would get your head bashed in, robbed or raped.

now if you dont think that is dangerous or the hood is a walk in the park by all means please come & visit where i rest at bro.

you will quickly changes your thoughts.

Wow, and all because I disagreed with you, lol. Thing is regularcat I don't take you or anybody or life anywhere near that seriously. Which is why I can laugh at your anger. It's all just people and their opinions, and yours are as relevent/irrelevent as the next person's.

Simple truth is that video games are responsible for the dumbing down of kids' intellects and the fattening up of their asses. Going outside and playing sports is both social and healthy. Sitting in front of a screen and pushing buttons on a gamepad is neither, bottomline.

@Regularcat: I still don't think it's only due to how dangerous the world has become today, but I agree with you when you say it's because our parents didn't have what we have now, and we don't have what our children will have so we won't likely understand it eventually.

I mean, the same goes with cellphones: I can text while walking without having to look at the screen as I know which letters are on whick key and learned (to some extent) the behaviour of T9 so I can roughly predict which word will come up first, or second...
But I've seen people ask "if it's a phone why doesn't it have wires?" so I'm pretty sure it works the way you pointed put.

By the way, my parents always told me I was wasting my time when I was younger and used to spend 2/3 hours a day playing PES plus several hours per week creating kits, now that I'm 26 I still play FIFA and a couple of other games regularly (trying to edit something for FIFA too, though I'm not as good as I used to be with PES6 editing) and I don't feel like I'm wasting time.

Of course if I spent 10 hours a day playing leaving behind school/work, friends and/or girlfriend I would say "something's wrong here" but playing everyday for a reasonable amount of time is by no means a waste of time.
Of course only you can define what is "reasonable" to you, according to your daily tasks.

im not angry, i just dont understand how you can feel that video games are the only reason people are obese, like eating habits, genetics, etc have nothing to do w/ it.

my kid has a nintendo ds & she play the brain games as much as any other games, which i dont feel dumb her down.

she also plays the sims which i think of as a life simulation more than a game, it gets her acquainted w/ having to get up for work, cleaning up, managing work/fun time & daily habits of life that will help her as she grows up.

& if there are kids who just sit in front of a screen pressing buttons all day, then its not the kids fault, its the parents.

this also goes for bangus also, the world is dangerous, maybe not as much for the grown adult who is more aware of things that go on & have the ability to make better decisions & not be affected by peer pressure.

but we are talking about children, young kids, especially teens who always feel the pressure of what everyone else is doing, i was one of them, i was always in the streets doing things i shouldnt have done, good thing i finally took the responsibility for what i was doing & stopped blaming it on others & being a product of my environment & doing something w/ myself keeping myself from failing in life.

the fact is the world is dangerous no matter how you look at it, kids snatched up every day, grown men & women raped & murdered every day.

i really dont feel comfortable allowing my child to run the streets, id rather her in doors, she doesnt need friends, friends come & go & in the end all you ever really have is yourself & your family.

Well, I wouldn't say playing video games is dumbing in any term from my perspective. As I said: "I'm a gamer for more then 10 years now..." and video games are part of my life. I know for sure one thing, I would never speak english as I do now. I learn it from the age of 6, but big part came from video games, as from speaking it and understanding it. Second thing, I used to like games like Age of Empires-Mythology, and other strategies that were historically accurate, and throughout them I actually informed my self of things that now kids learn in schools as "common knowledge", from Greek, Egyptian, Roman, Aztecs mythologies and cultures, to El Cid, Genghis Khan, Joan of Arc and other historical persons and events, what is in that age of learning very boring for every kid. Later, I became interested in history and started to study it. And all that throughout a fun way of playing video games. Same thing is today. Also, I understand that many kids play video games simply to "kill" their time without extracting anything good from it.

So, are video games dumbing is very arguably topic.

I play games occasionally as I have real world responsibilities. I come to the forums occasionally and see some of the same names and others who fly in and out. Finding a balance is important. I made a Megapatch a few years ago and if didn;t exactly help my health or encourage an active lifestyle or physical activity. It didn't help me socially either. As such playing games and modding is very much a part time thing which I enjoy but can live without - probably why I don't buy FIFA every year unless there is a discernable difference between the new game and the one I paid for previously.
I am not a fan of users who get on this forum and try to press peoples' buttons. They seem to spend time on here accunmulating posts and annoying others.

Computers can exercise your mind. Making kits and adboards can involve a certain amount of mental dexterity. Getting a country's leagues and cups to work together and not crash can be challenging, but a balance in your life does help. Being active should be encouraged.

Your parents are spouting the typical nonsense that the uninformed always come out with. Video games are a form of entertainment, that nowadays ranks alongside watching TV. As others have said, as long as you don't play too much, and do other things including active pursuits, then it's absolutely fine. I know kids that play much more than you do each day! Just don't let it get in the way of your homework (I'm assuming you're still at school?) and do lots of other things as well.

Now, now - don't tar us all with the same brush. ;) I certainly don't think 'skin and bones' is where it's at. As for the world being a dangerous place though, you are right. It's getting worse by the year.
