yo..
i have a amd athlon 64-bit 2800+ (which i tought was a 2.8Ghz..)
but it was 1.8Ghz

now...im deciding to buy a intel 3.2Ghz chip but from the views of my friend...MOST of them said dat my current AMD chip is equal to intel pentium 3.0Ghz....

so...in your opinion....which one should i stick with....AMD or Intel????

stick with your athlon....... my 3200 athlon64 performs equal if not better than my friend's P4 3.2 system which has double the ram and a 1 generation superior graphics card.... :S

i dont think its worth buying a new one

clock speed isnt always the best measure for the CPU....... but if it bothers you you could overclock it a bit :S

Heh, i was about to make a thread about this myself :)

I got this question, at the moment i have a slow ,old and crapy pentium 3.

I can get a new AMD Sempron 2200+(with 256MB DDR) for a very low price, how is this AMD Sempron 2200+ compared to Intel Pentium 3, 733 mhz ,128 mb, any good?

Is there any point of getting it or should wait til i get rich and get something better?

:$

AMD!

The equivalent AMDs to the Intels are alot cheaper and just as/more reliable

yeah...
i overclocked my cpu from 1.8 to 2.2Ghz but no difference.......

but i asked one of my engineer frend and he said dat

1) use amd systemz for gaming and all the stuff
2) use intel systemz for other stuffz.....

any commentz??

i think that when people see that AMD is cheaper they think it isn't as good as intel or something... thats what i thought.

A Sempron 2200+ will perform on par with a Celeron D 2.2ghz, so of course it will be a lot faster than a 733mhz PIII!

I'm about to update from PIII 866mhz -> A64 socket 939 3200+. Anyone about to get A64 should get the socket 939 chips as they are made on a smaller manufacturing process (90 microns instead of 130) and thus are cooler and need less power. (therefore can be ovreclocked more) (H)

I get fed up with people at school telling me to get a 3ghz presshot P4 because it's "faster" than a 2ghz A64. My summary is that imagine they are both buses and have to carry X amounft of people to point P. The Intel can do the trip faster, but it can carry less people than the AMD because it is less efficient.

OK, well that was kindof dumb, but you get the point. AMD rules at the moment (H)

EDIT: In response to an earlier post, Intels are better at multi-tasking and video encoding because they have HT technology, SSE3! (Athlons have SSE and SSE2) and they also have more L2 cache. (2mb in comparison to 512kb/1mb) In games however, the more efficient architechture of the A64/AXP makes them more efficient. Go to a site like www.tomshardware.com or www.anandtech.com and look at the benchmark comparisons.

I got AMD64 3200+ and it's prety fast for gaming. I got 21000 marks in 3dmark01 (o/c) and without o/c i get ~19500. 3d mark 03 gives me 6000 (i think havent used it much so i aint 100% sure) My system is 3200+ 512mb ram with good CL, 9800pro, NF3 mobo. Oh and even tho I have 5 fans inside the case, noise is actualy lower compared to my previous P41.7ghz system. (and much cooler too (hardly ever reaches 48c while playing games, and with o/c from 2.2ghz to 2.45)

Do you have a socket 754 (newcastle) or a socket 939 (winchester) Athlon 64 3200+?

Looking to OC my 939 3200+ when I get it on watercooling (H)

Out of interest, my current system gives me 1553 on 3DMark01 and 64 on 03 (H) :(

Youre joking, right?
Anyway get an athlon, not a sempron (thats like amds version of celeron). You will have to change motherboard and ram, not just ram when you change from intel to amd (or even some different amds to amd.. do the homework before upgrading).

Not really. I'm kindof going against myself here, but Sempron's have the same architecture as the A64's, except 256kb of L2 cache instead of 512kb/1mb. They perform better than Celeron's, and Semprons are pretty good chips. You can get the Sempron 3100+ (socket 754 - possible upgrade route for A64 too) and overclock it a good deal - from 1.8ghz to about 2.4/2.5ghz.

Mobo has to be changed, aye, but RAM depends on what you use. A64's take DDR RAM, like PC2100, PC2700, PC3200 etc. The best RAM at the moment for Athlon 64's (socket 939 is better as it allows dual memory) has to be the Crucial Ballistix PC4000, allows for good overclocks too (Y)

If im not mistaken (i have not been keeping up with hardware progress much in the last 6-12 months as i should have), only some semprons are based on a64 and the ones that are have no 64 bit capability. The ones that are not are not as fast as athlon xp equivilants.

At stock i would not recommend it for a gaming machine. Maybe oced it would be fine but im thinking even then you would need an upgrade sooner than is desirable, at least if youre playing new (at the time) games that have a lot of physics and ai calculations.
Also if i was upgrading to one of the 64 bit chips the only way i would go is s939.

Id imagine he has rdram. But then again ive never really been interested in intel chips, never owned one either so what do i know.

No Sempron has the 64-bit extensions, but the socket 754 one (3100+) has the same architecture as the Athlon 64 series. The socket A Semprons all have the Barton architecture. If you find a benchmark comparison, the 3100+ far outperforms the other Semprons, and it's a good overclocker as well.
