Angel seals Red Bulls switch

The Colombian international striker spent the past six-and-a-half years with Aston Villa following a £9.5million switch from River Plate in 2001.

Under Martin O'Neill, Angel's opportunities have dwindled, his last appearance coming as a late substitute in January having begun the season starting up front.

Following talk that a move to MLS was in the pipeline, O'Neill stated he would not stand in the way of Angel if the chance arose.

The 31-year-old swiftly sealed his transfer to the Red Bulls as their second designated player and fourth senior international.

Angel has agreed a three-year deal and joins former Manchester City midfielder Claudio Reyna at the Red Bulls.

"I am thrilled about acquiring Juan Pablo for the New York Red Bulls," said coach Bruce Arena on their official website.

"It is no secret that we have been searching for a striker since the end of the 2006 season, and Juan Pablo has been at the top of my list since day one.

"To bring him here is a great situation for both Juan Pablo personally and the Red Bulls. I believe in time he will prove to be an excellent addition to our team."

Angel added: "I am delighted to be joining the New York Red Bulls. I cannot wait to start this new exciting challenge.

"I believe Major League Soccer is growing fast and I am very keen to be part of this.

"I am grateful for the faith coach Bruce Arena and the club has put in me and I cannot wait to join up with my new team-mates.

"I would like to thank Martin O'Neill, Aston Villa and especially the supporters who have always made me so welcome and I will always have great memories of my time at the club. I wish the club well for the future."

That's unbelievable how much attraction Beckham made to the MLS, without even being there himself yet. But, that's a hell of a signing by New York. Angel is an unbelievable player and he should do well for the Red Bulls.
