Anyone ever noticed that pro footballers tend not to wear really protective shinpads?

Just noticed the other day that most footy players wear pretty weak shin pads. Take Henry for example, he just wears ones that you can put on whilst wearing your boots.

I wear ones that you have to put on first because they have the ankle protection.

I cant play with out them because i always manage to somehow get kicked in the ankle.

Anyone know why most footy players wear the small type shinpads without the ankle protection?

Other examples

Wiltord
Viduka
Becks
Kewell
Denilson

you can buy seperate ankle protectors or shin pads with detatchable ones so maybe they already have them on then put the shinpads on at the last possible minute

I've seen some players who just wear the thin plastic ones with thin foam, and they barely cover much of their shin. Must be for comfort and flexibility. I think at such a high level too, you dont get as many knocks to the shins as you would see in games we play in hehe :D

They wear them for comfort and flexibility. The ankle protectors obstruct your ankle movement I guess, and think of the amount the ankle moves round for example on Beckham's free kicks. They're professional athletes and shouldn't be worried about getting hurt (although arguably, with a lot of the players today [South American's, Portuguese, Italians mainly], although being incredibly skillful, they can hardly take a tackle without crying and falling to the floor!)

They should wear better ones with people like Campbell, Keane, etc playing near you.
Im sure if someone like Keane wanted to go after you, no shin pad or ankle guard in the world is gonna save your ass.:crazyboy:

i thought the laws say that every player must wear a shinpad for the safety..... who knows, their career might be over at just before 30....

I wear just small plastic gaurds w/ a little foam layer. I also wear those thin stretchy things to keep them in place. Those big bulky things are uncomfortable, heavy, and they look stupid. May seem dumb but you have too look good while playing, right? Plus I hardley ever see proffessionals wearing gaurds w/ ankle protectors.

The reason is that the pros don't like the ankle prtectors as wel as wanting the extra flexability.

Even semi-pros are like that. When i played semi I was one of the only members of the squad who wore ankle protectors.

a few years back a opposing player misskicked theball and hit me in the shin... it snapped my pad in two.

I always wear them even at training... I actually feel weird if I dont have em on (when Im playing)

Its like That in the NFL too.....Wide Recievers and Tight Ends and some Running Backs wear very thing or no Thigh pads and Knee Pads....While compared to High School where we have to wear Thigh and Knee Pads.
