Aragones fined for Henry remarks

Spain coach Luis Aragones has been fined 3000 euros (£2060) for racist remarks made about Thierry Henry.

It had been expected that Aragones, 66, would be fined in the region of £22,000 or even lose his job but he has been fined the equivalent of a day's wages.

The Spanish Football Federation at first declined to take action against Aragones, but was then requested to do so by Spain's anti-violence commission.

Aragones made the remarks to Arsenal and Spain's Jose Reyes last October.

He insisted the comments were meant to motivate the Spanish player, by comparing him favourably with club-mate Henry, and were not intended to be offensive.

"I never intended to offend anyone, and for that reason I have a very easy conscience," the Spain boss said at the time.

"I'm obliged to motivate my players to get the best results.

"As part of that job, I use colloquial language, with which we can all understand each other within the framework of the football world."

Aragones has apologised publicly to Henry, although not personally, for any offence caused by his comments, which were captured by a television crew.

The Spanish Football Federation - which has now given its coach 10 days to appeal - also apologised formally last year.

The size of the fine has been attacked by anti-racism campaigners.

Kick It Out spokesman Leon Mann said on Tuesday: "We expected very little from the Spanish Football Association and are not surprised by this pitiful fine.

"The only positive is there's finally been a recognition that what Aragones said was racist, despite his protests.

"Questions have to be asked as to why the fine is only 3,000 Euros when it took such a lengthy process to get to this decision, and why someone found guilty of a racist comment is still in a job.

"Imagine what would have happened if Sven-Goran Eriksson had come out and said the same."

Kick It Out believes racism is a problem in Spain, where Aragones took the national job in July 2004, taking over from Inaki Saez.

"The situation in Spanish football at the moment is desperate," added Mann.

"The only other positive is that games are now being stopped and some action is being taken as a first step, but the campaigners on the ground are still being ignored."

In November, one month after Aragones made his comments, England played a friendly in Madrid and the visitors wore anti-racism tops in the warm-up.

But black players Ashley Cole and Shaun Wright-Phillips still received racist abuse from the crowd, for which the Spanish FA was fined £44,750.

But the director general of Spain's Upper Sports Council, Rafael Blanco, dismissed the possibility of a link between that abuse and Aragones' comments.

Blanco said: "Luis is not responsible for the fact that there have been outbreaks of racism in stadiums.

"That would be simplifying things and a big injustice.

"He made some comments that are inappropriate for his position and as the law stipulates, it has to be treated by the appropriate bodies."

Just before that match, Aragones also made a controversial remark about Britain's military history, saying he "remembered the colonies".

But the president of the Spanish FA's competitions committee, Alfredo Florez, said that comment was "not of great seriousness".

At least we know the guy we are judging...

Can you tell me how is Aragones? You just know what he said to Reyes in a private training, and what he said to the english press that was there to provocate Aragones until Aragones was very hot and said bad words about UK past.

Please if the spanish guys are defending Aragones, is not cause he is spanish, is cause we know Aragones and we know there is a special meaning in his words that you all cant understand.

I understand u can judge Aragones like a racist bastard, but please, is not so easy as saying that. Personally i would like to be Aragones to be kicked from the spanish NT cause i dont like his style in spanish team.

Typical of you guys to shut your ears to our comments.

To make this real simple, it's a language thing, and you guys don't know the Spanish language. Even if you took Spanish, you wouldn't understand it. His statements translate into very offensive words, but I assure you that in Spanish his statements hardly touch on racism. Calling Henry a **** player, that's something else. But if you're talking about racism, I don't think you know what you're talking about.

As for the fine, yeah, it's ridiculous. If they're going to say that he did something wrong, hit him with it. Otherwise they should have acknowledged that it was okay. Middle of the road does not work.

I speak spanish and i know what Aragones said in Spanish isn't as bad as it would be in English but futbol is a worldwide sport and what is said in Spanish is obiously going to be translated so it is uncalled for, whatever he meant or whatever you understande by it doesn't really matter if he was a normal spanish guy wallking down the street it wouldn't be a problem but he is the coach of the Squad the represents your country and with the recent events with rasicm he shoul of been dealt with approietly a days wage what a joke.

WOW!!!! That's really gonna make a huge dent in his bank account:rolleyes: What a fucking joke:| I still cannot believe anyone's trying to protest his innocence since what he said has already been confirmed. Such stupidity shouldn't be shown by someone who represents the country in footballing terms. His comments were uncalled for, end of. He's damn lucky not to be sacked too.

@Crus - I see you're trying to top your post about Zaragoza(I think) fans making monkey noises at Eto'o not because he's black but because he doesn't like it. Not quite there, but keep trying and I'm sure you'll get it.(Y)

Things can have a completely different meaning when they are translated from one language to another. However, I know and understand Spanish (obviously) and when I hear "negro de mierda," I think its racist. I don't know how things work over in Spain but something like that comes across as racist to me. The tone in which he said it might give it a different meaning (my Cuban uncle usually talks like that but he's joking around) but I can't tell since I've only read what he said.

If you dont understand spanish you should not judge that so easily. Doing comments about something you dont understand is just to be an ignorant.

Aragones said something in private training to motivate Reyes, not to insult Henry. And even when Aragones offered to say sorry in person to Henry if he felt insulted, you still are attacking Aragones.

He cant say sorry, he cant do anything, just burn it and get his soul !! Inquisition is back!! :P
