Are woman referees a good idea?

I'm all for equality but i do see one catch with woman refs, at least in Scotland.

As most matches start at 3pm on Saturdays and don't finish until 4.45, who's going to be at home making her man's dinner while she's out refereeing football matches?

I'm sure there's a lot of good women refs out there ... but ever single time I've seen one in action/been reffed by one, she's been absolutely shocking and clueless

We have a woman ref in Brazil, and she's quite good (ugly, yeah, but good ref)... also, when she refs a match, the assistants are also women, and look much better than her...

But I'm not sure if it's a good idea to bring them into football... I mean, if a male ref makes a wrong decision, it's fine, but if it's a woman, they'll all call for her head... Tevez and Ceni already had problems with the female ref, though not serious problems... Tevez said important matches should be handled by men, implying women were a bit weak to hold the match in these occasions, while Ceni complained too much about a red card, maybe implying that if it was a man, he wouldn't have been sent off (long ago, can't remember precisely)

anyway, here's a pic of our ref and assistants:

(ref to the far left, best assistant to far right)

also, in the attachment bonus pic of our assistant

They'd just be waiting to bury her if she made anything resembling a mistake. Women' s refs in a women' s league!

i wouldnt mind if they look like Sharapova or Leticia Kasta :p

That would be a marketing ploy...atleast in warmer parts. Similar story to what the LPGA wants from women' s golfers...seems like they are shedding more and more clothing each year.

It depends on the time of the month. If the painters are in or shes just been dumped then no. They usually take things out on men in general.

erm, no. but anyone who diidn't know i was joking might be an idiot

I knew (well, hoped) it was a joke but thats not what I'm talking about.

You don't make a thread about black refs, adding a line like "how can they be referees, when they should polish shoes", don't you?

i think the players would show a lack of respect because generally, they do not command as much respect as men would. im not trying to be sexist, but i think that is realistic. players would show more dissent

I know this is a little off topic but has there ever been any women that have played at a top flight men's team?

I don't think many of players would respect a female ref, I'd tell her to go **** herself if she gave me a red... but I do that to all refs regardless of sex. Nonetheless, a ref needs to command respect, and I just don't think most men would appreciate a woman calling the shots.

Expect more discussion to come about this, at least here in Brazil...

here's something on today's ongoing Palmeiras vs. Corinthians match:

"A auxiliar que anulou o gol não havia levantado a bandeira em nenhum momento do lance. Ana Paula Oliveira marcou falta de Tevez depois da jogada ter sido definida."

"The assistant who said the goal was invalid hadn't raised her flag in any moment. Ana Paula Oliveira said Tevez had fouled his marker in the play that lead to the goal, after the goal was scored"

that's from Terra's live coverage of the match... in the TV, they said that Tevez didn't foul his marker, and that nothing was wrong with the play...

after the match I think they'll interview the assistant... if anything interesting comes out of this, I'll post here... (so far, 1-1, the goal would have put Corinthians ahead)

EDIT: To make stuff a bit more clear, the play was happening on the left side of Corinthians' attack, opposite to where the assistant was... also, she ran back to the halfway line after the goal was scored...

We had a woman ref in some pointless games in Mexico's 1st division a year or two ago. Shes gone back to been a linesman and crap. She wasnt that good, and Blanco told her to go back into the kitchen once. (H)
