English egos are for the English to worry about Sean......not the Irish. And in the words of Hernan Crespo "England versus Argentina is never friendly".I think the English in general are aware of the stature or not of this result, and don't really need reminding. After everyone having a laugh over the Denmark and N.Ireland games, its very nice to be able to say that we had a blip on those occasions and the win against Argentina reinforces the knowledge that we are actually a formidable side when we need to be.If that sounds like an inflated ego,its just a conclusion reached, not by one game but by the overall impression from many games. So ....no need for little digs at the English mate.
relax there mate. i truly believe, on paper, the english should win the world cup. i mean look at this:

------------Robinson------------------
-Neville---Terry---Ferdinand---A. Cole-
-Beckham--Gerrard--Lampard--J. Cole--
--------Owen---Rooney---------------

that's the best team you've had in years. i wasn't having a cheap pop at england, i was just pointing out it was a "friendly". i enjoy watching england play, and i wouldn't mind seeing them win the world cup, as long as they didn't talk about it forever of course. only 1 loss in qualifying says it all (9 out of 10 wins was it?) i was only pointing out after the losses to denmark and n. ireland that there was demands to sack sven and the team was in "turmoil" and after 1 match it changed (beating argentina).

oh, and i do worry about the irish team and the shambles we are in at the minute. i try not to think about it as I'd like to live to my 21st birthday.

Fair enough Sean.....no offence intended mate.Just wanted to clarify exactly where you were coming from thats all.
But aint that always the way with our media?Over react when we win and over react when we lose.To the "normal" fan, wins and losses are all part of the game and we all expect to lose sometime,it aint a big deal to me.Dissapointing yes,but not a big enough problem to sack the entire England setup,as the papers would have us do.I was pretty pleased to be honest, for the Northern Ireland fans when we lost to them.England were bad and N.I. were not any better, but i knew it wouldn,t dent qualification too much, and anyway, sometimes a loss like that is important to keep ,as you rightly said, ego's in check.England are the perrenial non-achievers,and most fans recognise that, including England fans.So its just nice for us to win now and again when it matters. And when its against one of the old rivals, its even better.WE do OK.I love the fact that everyone would still like to beat us,thats paying us a lot of respect.Even if the other team dont realise it. :ewan:

funnily enough, the defeat to northern ireland i think will prove to be a good thing. it could be the catalyst they needed! team spirit in the english dressing room is great. i just wish the media would relieve them of a bit of the pressure. like just say you go to another penalty shoot-out, the players taking penaltys can't be fearing for their lives if they miss. the fans are great, the players are great - and with some more media support, you will have a great tournament.

england are still one of the world's best teams, and everyone wants to beat them - but you deserve that respect

"On paper", Brasil should win the world cup every year. ;)

The same way they were 24 years without winning it.

I'm still sort of surprised about the "let Tévez and Riquelme do whatever they want" from England. This could be a real disventage for England in the world cup, and a big adventage for Argentina, so besides the defense they must work about finishing the chances they do.

Argentina played well, they were, at times, doing the basics so well. Fluid passing, smooth play and team work. Abonceniri (sp?) played very well.

Abbondanzieri you mean? I know, its a difficult name to spell jeje. I don't really like him as our goalkeeper (for me, he is a bit mediocre) In a couple of shots from Beckham and Owen, he was not able to catch the ball, but instead had it bounce off his hand. But oh, well, that is the best we have at our goal..

Commentators' nightmare... and maybe forum users.

I rewatched the match, Riquelme was brilliant. Probably outshone all the England players bar Rooney.

I think commentators should just call Abbondanzieri "PATO" which is his nickname in Boca and in Argentina...
