Senderos can be a star, says Niedzwiecki
By Chris Harris
Arsenal fans have waited a long time to catch a glimpse of Philippe Senderos.
The Swiss defender has been plagued by injuries since arriving at Highbury last summer, but he finally left his mark in a red and white shirt on Tuesday night.
Senderos scored the winner as Arsenal's second-string beat Portsmouth 1-0, and Reserve team manager Eddie Niedzwiecki believes there is plenty more to come from the 19-year-old
Philippe has had a very frustrating season," he told Arsenal.com. "That was his first 90 minutes in an Arsenal shirt since he came here.
"Obviously he came here with a big reputation. He has showed tremendous character to battle back from numerous injuries and it's great to see him out there.
"He certainly needs games but even at the end of Tuesday night's match he was urging the team on, telling them to dig in and fight.
"He is a leader and hopefully now he can have a few games before the end of the season."
Senderos remains something of an unknown quantity in English football, but there is no doubting his pedigree. He led Switzerland to success at the European Under-17 championship in 2002.
Arsenal snapped him up shortly after the tournament, and Niedzwiecki believes Senderos has the attributes to be a success in the Premiership.
"He's a strong character, he's a leader, he's not frightened to put his foot in or his head in," he said.
"He's got good pace and he's good on the ball. He's still a very young player but he has a lovely stature and a lovely presence on the field.
"He attacks the ball very well and he organises people at the back. He's had a few too many setbacks but he had a terrific 90 minutes on his comeback and the signs are encouraging."
