PATRICK VIEIRA will be forced to take a £10,000-a-week pay-cut to join Real Madrid - and the Spanish giants will only offer half of Arsenal's £30million transfer valuation.
It is a major setback to Vieira's hopes of moving to the Bernabeu. Real's hard line could even threaten the deal going ahead at all.
The France star would love to play in La Liga. Whether he is prepared to pay £10,000-a-week - that's £500,000-a-year - for the privilege, remains to be seen.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has insisted he will only offer around £15m when he finally launches his first official bid this week. And Perez has also made it clear that Vieira will not be joining as one of Real's 'Galacticos'"and therefore they will offer him less than his current £70,000-a-week wages at Highbury.
Perez is steadfastly refusing to break Madrid's pay structure and will not put Vieira in the same superstar wage bracket as likes of Raul, Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo and David Beckham.
Real are renowned for dragging out transfers, and they believe they can pay less than the asking price because the French midfielder is desperate to join them.
Perez has even warned he might switch targets to Roma's Brazilian star Emerson - a move designed to pile the pressure on Vieira and his advisers.
But it is a risky strategy as Arsenal are reluctant to sell and the August 5 transfer deadline for Champions League qualification is fast approaching.
Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein is preparing to fly to the club's training base in Austria tomorrow for talks with Vieira and coach Arsene Wenger in a bid to resolve the player's future.
But Vieira - along with the rest of their Euro 2004 stars - is unlikely to play in any of Arsenal's pre-season friendlies until the Amsterdam tournament kicks off on Friday when the Gunners play Boca Juniors. However, Vieira is now hoping that Real decide to follow up their interest as he has privately admitted his desire to move to Spain.
Vieira is not Wenger's only concern as his England centre back Sol Campbell is a major injury doubt and faces a race to be fit for the start of the season.
Campbell, 29, first sustained the Achilles injury at Euro 2004. He reported for pre-season training but he is only having treatment and is unlikely to play in the Amsterdam tournament.
Campbell, who was dogged by a hamstring injury throughout last season, was given an extended break along with the other Arsenal stars who played in the European Championship finals in Portugal.
But Campbell is still struggling with his Achilles injury which makes him a doubt for the Community Shield against Manchester United on August 8 and the first Premiership game of the season with Everton a week later.
Arsenal are lacking in experienced cover in the centre of defence with the inconsistent Frenchman Pascal Cygan and unproven Swiss teenager Philippe Senderos the only options to replace Campbell and play alongside Kolo Toure.

tbh i think edu is one of the best central mids out there - if he was quick then he could be even more reliable than, dare i say it, vieira. but hes not quick and thats vital. also, wenger would pick gilberto over edu so thats why i put him in there.

on Copa America Edu showed to be so-so. He held the ball for too long to come up short handed for losing it. I'm sure he has a good playing vision but was not quick enough to excute his plays or maybe he didn't get used to play the different playing style that he plays in Arsenal, I got to tell you that I've never seen him playing for Arsenal before. But in the Brazilian NT I'd prefer Kleberson, who shows to be more effective, than Edu.

Edu is an alrite player i wouldnt say he's first team material in any other team but because the gunners dont have another worldclass Centre mid he has to start. Edu is not a very good passer of the ball, he is too slow, his vision isnt great either and gilberto isnt much better. i say we move pires into the centre alongside vieira and play van persie on the left.
Ha fucking ha. Did you watch a match involving Edu at all last season? His passing is better than Vieira's he's got great vision and technique. Yes, he may be lacking a little in pace but you don't really need to run 100m in 10 seconds if you're a central holding midfielder, no? Not to mention he has a nice shot.
He may have been a little ordinary in the Copa America but the things BRAZIL'S_#9 certainly didn't apply much when he was playing for Arsenal anyway. *shrug* He's not exactly a first-team regular in the Brazillian NT, is he?
