Iran - Much benched Bayern Munich striker Vahid Hashemian showed his club what they are currently missing with two well taken goals to lead Iran to a 2-1 win over Asian champions Japan in a World Cup qualifier in Group B.

It was certainly though, a bad comeback for Hidetoshi Nakata who’s presence seemed to be bad omen as Japan slumped to their first defeat to an Asian team for a very long time.

Iran went ahead in the 24th min through Hashemian who rammed the ball to the top corner of the net after picking up a free kick which floated into the box. The Japanese would feel hard done by this goal as Akira Kaji looked like he has been pulled down by Iran midfielder Javad Nekounam.

That goal seemed to have inspired Iran in front of their 100,000 plus Azadi fans who are doing the Mexican wave to show their happiness at the score before half time.

Japan on the other hand hasn’t been threatening much compared to Iran, which will sure be the topic of conversation for Zico when his men hit the dressing room at half time.

With a goal down, the Nippon had to do the chasing in the second half and they showed more purpose, beginning with a 52nd min free kick by Reggina man Shunsuke Nakamura who bended the ball well for goalkeeper Ebrahim Mirzapour to palm the shot away.

Messina’s Atsushi Yanagisawa comes on for an ineffective Keiji Tamada, who was Japan’s top scorer in their 2004 Asian Cup triumph, in the 62nd min.

Five minutes later, Yanagisawa wins a header in the air in Iran’s box which Takashi ***unishi reacted fastest to slam home the equaliser. The goal was what the game needed to push the excitement levels a notch higher.

However, the killer blow for Japan came in the 75th min. Reigning AFC Player of the Year Ali Karimi was given space to roam on the right and he crosses for Hashemian who is prowling in the box. The Bayern Munich player rises above the Japanese defence to head home Iran’s second and winning goal to seal the match. Iran’s win put them level on top of the group together with Bahrain with equal points and goals.

:ewan: oh, late reply,
Japan has gone under a lot of threat lately, not from Iran, but from each other
H. Nakata shouldn't deserve to be captain, he has done bad captaincy
meaning, that when ever his captain they either draw or actually lose.
I'd rather have anyone in the team to be captain,
the game against iran was a poor display, but i like how iran played it was very good, very disapointing to japan, and i support japan as well...that's bad they did a poor performance, Iran did good, they are a strong team..
