Asian Movies remakes

the last couple of years we are seeing more and more 'foreign' movies being remade in Hollywood such as The Ring 1 and 2, The Grudge, Insomnia, Solaris etc..etc... I enjoy watching Asian movies and most of them are quite good.

I do recommend you to watch the original productions if subtitles are available to you. There are still a few popular Asian movies that have their North American rights bought and I am still waiting to see what they are going to make from it.
A few notables:
The film that exploded the korean movie industry in Asia was the hit "My Sassy Girl"(2001) and Dreamworks has bought the American rights to it. It's a movie about a plain guy meeting this beautiful girl thru some funny incidents and this girl seems to like beating him up but in a cute and funny way. There are also a few Easter eggs in this movie where theres a flying saucer in the corner of one scene and a few background characters being played by the same person. (a side note: in most modern asian cultures girls can be very bossy these days, but they are cute)

according to imdb.com this movie was/is planned to be released in 2006 but still no info on who will be in the movie yet.

Another Korean movie. According to IMDB the American version of 'Il Mare' will star Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock and be released in 2006. In short, it's about a man and a woman somehow is communicating thru a mailbox. But what surprising is is that they are living in different years (e.g. male in 1995 and female in 2005).

"The Departed"(2006) will include casts such as Leonardo Dicaprio, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg, Carlos Nicholson and directed by Martin Scorcese. The original is a 3 part movie 'Infernal Affairs' 1 thru 3. It is about the HongKong triad(in american it should be the mob or mafia) sending someone to infiltrate the police through the police academy and rising in rank as years past. At the same time the police sent a young fresh out of the academy officer to infiltrate the triads. And both sides tries to flush out the mole. It's definitely a thriller and worth watching.

Asian movies aren't only action and fighting.
In Asia "Fans say that Hong Kong owns the action movie, Japan rules the horror genre, and Korea produces the best comedies." (subwaycinema)

I tend to always prefer the Asian originals :p

This isnt really a new thing though, lots of the classic westerns are remakes of Japanese films (Magnificant Seven, A Fistfull of Dollars etc)

Interestingly, I have only seen one recent film, that I can think of, which is an Asian remake of an American film (Infernal Affairs from Internal Affairs) and it absolutely wipes the floor with the American version.

and like Carlos*y said, will be remade again from Scorcese with DiCaprio, Damon, Wahlberg, and Carlos Nicholson. I say it cant miss with that cast (Y)

Im also looking forward to OldBoy (the asian one) which we're just getting this summer.

I preferred the american version of The Grudge over the japanese one. Although i think the storyline was kind of different in a way in the fact there was no diary in the japanese one if i recall correctly.

Forgot the Chinese, some say they do great romantics. Last asian film i saw was actually one of those, 2046. An absolute beauty. Too bad i don't have time to watch so many films anymore, the asians were always my favorites. I do recommend people to get the originals, the remakes sometimes tent to be more watered-down for pop audiences.

@Hakeem

Haha, i thought the original Ju-on was good, very creative for its time.

Worst japanese horror film of 2004?, Chakushin ari by Takashi Mike. I respect the guy alright, but sometimes he just does some awful films. "A ghost will kill you if your name or phone number was on the cellular of the last person that was killed." I mean serioulsy, nothing can out-do that. :funny:

And it's being directed by Tsukamoto, is this for real? :funny:

Oh god, it's going to be even worst than the first one. I have to see it, it'll be entertaining. :o
Don't get me wrong, i just love bad, or so called "b" horror movies.

Oh, here's the BD Review:

I dont even bother with thoe crappy horror remakes, I know what I'm gonna get and that I wont enjoy it. The only Japanese horror film I have ever seen is Versus, which I thought was very good but in the respect that it's funny in it's rediculousness, not that it's a well made or scary film.
