Someone said before that if you look at Australia's FIFA ranking we must be shit. Since when do FIFA rankings mean anything???
Australia beat a full strength mexican team in the confed cup without it's best players and mexico are supposed to be no.15 in the world.

Friendlies mean nothing

I hope Australia go through, and I hope they do well, but they are never going to be a top side until they play in an asian qualifying group. They get 2 challenging(ish) games against new zealand and then get to play a play-off (which is wrong).

Instead of having a europe v asia play-off and a south america v oceana play-off, there should be a europe v south america play-off and an extra place for asia straight off but with the oceana teams being in the asian section.

Personally, I thought the mateh the other day was poor, but it's nice to see Kewell has found some form.

As for Muscat, he should have been sent of, and is not good enough, and as soon as some decent players attack him down that right side, australia will crumble. You are only as good as your weakest player. (also englands problem with the neville brothers).

Giggsy mate, I dont know whether you are English, Welsh or whatever, but Australia has as good of a chance of being in the world cup as your nation will ever have.
If your Welsh, when have they qualified??? A whole nation can produce only one top player in Ryan Giggs? What happened mate, it seems the Welsh are sticking to RUGBY!!! At which Australia is better anyway.

England, well WC98 and EURO2000 are two tournaments that should be mentioned regarding England's standing as a footballing nation. Wow, you beat Germany 5-1, but guess what, that was the biggest FLUCK in the POMS history since beating the Germans 3-2 in 1966. Somehow its always the Germans. 1994 you didnt qualify thanx to a Koeman free kick. In 98' you couldnt take penalties, in 2000, well you were simply POOR.

You say Australia doesnt have what it takes to be amongst the top footballing nations in the world, well guess what neither does England or Wales.

For the person that said the USA is better than Australia, bring it on mate!!!

Here's a little comparison. For WC98 we played Iran twice and drew twice, however if you remember correctly, USA LOST to Iran.

Well, that concludes my little report, with only one thing to say:

BEWARE MONTEVIDEO, THE AUSSIES ARE COMING AND THEY ARE COMING TO WIN !!! AND WIN WE WILL, SINCE OUT HUNGER IS GREATER!!!

p.s. I mean come on, how much of a Gay game did Uruguay play, defended for 90mins with 10 players behind the ball. THAT is more gay than the San Francisco MARDI GRAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just want to point out two things:

a) Australia would be a much better national soccer team than most European and South American teams if they were able to play more games against competitive teams, and this with their best players.
I think it's obvious that Australia is the team with the most unexploited potential in the whole of FIFA.

b)Why should Uruguay go through after finishing 5th of a qualifying stage, when Australia have dominated their zone totally ?
We need this qualification in order to progress, and unlike Uruguay, we can actually have a shot at teams in the World Cup.
Need I remind the Confederations Cup results...
Australia isn't a top team, but it's got the potential to be one, with more experience, whereas Uruguay isn't a team with so much space for improvement. No offense ment guys, it's just my opinion.

Analice this

I am Colombian, an supossed to be in the Uruguayan side, but after seen its so patethic way to play on the australian match (common, defend 90 minutes? for a team that one day won over Brazil in the Maracana? and that suposed to have top quality players? What a shame!) , then I have to say that looking it from the good played football angle, its Australia that has to be on the WC and not Uruguay.
But for my australian friends, it needs more than an excellent qualifying round for be inportant on the WC, just see the (painfull for us) example of that great Colombia 94 team, we kicked the asses of every team that we played before the USA's WC, and playing in the WC we passed from be the new football stars from southamerica, to be the biggest FIASCO, been eliminated after 2 matches. And on the WC is that you see the real tradition of the big teams. Must of the foorball game is in the head ! an strong mind and historic tradition are very important.
I can garantee you that for example a team like Brazil that has played its worst qualifying series of all the time (common, to be 4 of 5????) is going to make a good roll in the WC, maybe not for been in the finals, but at least passing to 8ths or 4ths. And that is because they are a team made for playing world cups.
I hope that Hernan Dario Gomez (assistent colombian manager on 94)has learned the lesson of USA 94 and don't let Ecuador fall on the same mistakes as Colombia had in that year.
And I hope that Argentina continues playing like it is doing now, and have the good luck that is needed always in these events, they are my team now after Nederlands have been eliminated, I almost can still not beleave it, they have so good players, and are not gonna be on the WC :(

I would stop being cocky, i am a Australian aswell! but we are going to a country that spits on us! when they loose a game they go looting! now could you play in a stadium with everyone agaisnt you! think of the pressure! its not going hard for Australia To crack! i do hope Australia do win! but come on! Australias crowds are poor! we boo when there goalie graps the ball! now come on! its bulls**t, think about it, in England, do you see the crowd boo when a goalie pulls of a good save, no not really!. Australia need something new in football! even a name change, something like the APL! Australian Premier League, now how more classy does that sound to The Nationonal Soccer League!

I beleive for Australian soccer to sucseed in Australia we need Dramatic changes, yeh we are ok as a national team! but there is like one player that plays in the NSL! Europe and America take us Australians in and make us good!

hmm too much talk... well see in the grass, next sunday....the centenario stadium is not a peace of cake....and one penalty goal dosn´t make autralia the best... come on...88 australians....suporting and just one penalty goal?

some one there said that is unfair that if australia defeat every body in their zone they have later to play with 5 of conmebol....well....actually it is fair!
1) australia is 1000 times more powerfull than the other oceania teams...it would be unfair to GIVE them free qualify....untill the other nations learn to play futbol there would not be free pass to the wc...come on! u beat them for more than 20 goals....they suck!
2) conmebol, by history and futbol....had a lot of advantage... u must won ur position in futbol world.... and i must say...u r doing it pretty well...but patience.

the colombian guy....im sorry dude...u seem to be mad because ur team was left out, by uruguay it self.

by the way...all my life i have been a colombian fan, but i mus say im pretty happy u didn´t make it thru the "repechaje" game against asutralia...
1) because i kinda hate maturana....he stole us here at costa rica, and did a very bad work as a dt. never work it!
2) because colombia had their chance at 90, 94, and 98....all the times kissing the floor, leaving us sad... Uruguay needs a chance.
3) cause i dont think colombia well ve able todefeat australia.... an i do believe uruguay can!!!

vamoss charruasssssssss!!!!!!

I am sorry my friend but you are wrong.

1st. I am not mad because colombia was out. It was not Uruguay that left us out, it was the horrible campain that we made and loosing so much points home. I was expecting to see the national team out from the WC LONG TIME AGO, meybe since July. I am not a fanatic, I like the good foorball, and I can say that this colombian team of this quilifyings simply sucks, and this is a lesson that our directives were needing, now I espect all they been sweep out from their positions, they are just soo bad and without criteria.

2nd. I don't like Maturana either. I think he WAS a great manager(90s), but now simply SUCKS! What he did to Costa Rica and Peru, and after to colombia itself, come on! He has to retired already! And El Chiqui Garcia did not so much either for the team, he was also an ultra defensive DT, not at all matched for the players that can be find here. And I think they did so wrong calling this antiques and oldies like Asprilla and Aristizabal, they were needing wheel chairs to play man!

3rd. Read my post well pal. Uruguay was my team for that match in Melbourn, as a suuthamerican that I am, I was wishing them to win. BUT after seen them playing like they did I felt totally dissapointed :( It is because I like well played football, not the people that go and hide under the 3 sticks, Uruguay has so good players like EL Chino Recova, and its unbelieveble that they played like they did, and if you see the qualifying matches they have played like this almost all the season. I then saw the Aussies playing (or trying to) put the show, good football (in their style) and that is something that I give value to. I think they are just needing a guy with more technic, like a 10 of a good south american team, to have better results. If they won only for a penalty, it was because Uruguay had all its team defending. Sad IMO.

4th. Its true that El Centenario is a difficult place to play, but I really think that Australia can make a good presentation there. If Uruguay chooses to play like before, with art and atacking, with all the GARRA that they had, then I hope that they pass, but if they are gonna defend themselves again like in Melbourn, then I am sorry but IMO they have to stay out of the WC.

you got a poin on that...
tell me abou it..

Well to be honest Australia played much better football in the match in Melbourne and to have a result of 1 - 0 was definately deserved to the Australians despite it being a penalty. But then again full credit to the Uruguay defence on containing the Australian attack. We had over 10 corner chances and failed to come close apart from one occasion.

As with the game in Montevideo, I think we have a chance. However the very intimidating home crowd in Uruguay may play some psychological games on the Aussies. We have the depth and skill to beat Uruguay once again, not just Kewell and Viduka but also Emerton who seems to carve up everyone on the right wing and also Craig Moore who has defended bloody well against the likes of Zidane, Trezguet and Recoba. So no doubt we have what it takes to kick ass!!!.

Nostradamus, you and Requiem both show that your new at following you countries fortunes in football, the reason I jumped on Requiem at the start of this post is that he was so cocky, you have to realise how difficult it is to win the biggest sporting prize on the planet, the only one that really matters, The World cup!

Big footballing nations like Spain have never won the world cup yet in their entire history, even when the world cup was held in spain in 82, it is tough at the top, and thats why you and requiem are in cloud cookoo land if you think Australia are going to be one of the top nations in world football anytime in the next decade or so, its just so hard to achieve, we are not talking Cricket or Rugby here where only a few countries play it, and those games arent even popular in the countries that do play it, which is why you win in those sports, but football is anothe matter, England won the holy grail in 66 and no one can take that away from us, and why is it when we thrash the Germans and become only the 2nd team in the entire history of their game to beat them at home in a world cup q'fier game that its a fluke? you dont win flukes 5-1 there, you play well and you deserve the credit, football has its ups and downs and thats why Australia should just concentrate on qualifying, that is the greatest thing they can do, but dont get carried away, they havent got there yet, and I dont think they will make it, sorry but Uruguay will likely beat them, if you lose then, just pick yourselves up and try again, but dont ever think football is as easy to master as cricket.

all this talk about Australia as one of the best soccer teams in the world is nonsense................i mean they lost to no. 5 in the south american qualification...........and there are at least 15 european sides that are better than them.................

eventhough they´ve had good results - they have never made it in a "real" match.....so don´t refer to all these good results because they don´t count. The matches that count are WC, WC-qualifiaction and similar games........

sorry...but thats the way it is...............Uruguay just showed that they are better when it really counts..................

clearing up confusion

Hey i think the reason most of us Australians appeared cocky isnt because we are but because someone took a cheat slandering shot at our country and sporting history . Hey uruguay won good for them you know they'll go well .. they out smarted us with tactics and flare. As for the guy who said USA would have done better how come then the seedings for the world cup would have had australia in the third string rather than the fourth with USA ? fifa obviously see what most other sane people see. Australia is a country that will give its guts out to win and when it doesnt it can accept that . As for Australias qualifying directly it would be good but isnt the answer.. this wouldnt make us any better as a team because our passage would become to easy why not mix Our Zone with Asia ... similar time zones less flying , why not ?
plus we would get better at individual games against tougher countries

HERE WE COME GERMANY 2006 !!!!!!!
:D
