That's because you're a mod, mods and admins have always had this option.

Well, I've tried off several different .gifs now and none worked.

Then you must be doing something wrong. Are you sure that they are animated? The one you have now only have one layer and is not animated.

They do now. I think the option got removed automatically when we updated the forums for a newer version of vbulletin.
