Backline like a fishnet stocking ...

Or, as I should say full of holes.

I guess the reason I'm dropping a line is to see if anyone can help me in my struggle to play a competitive game on World Class.

It began when I was dominating sem-pro. Dominating possession, anyway, but I only managed a couple goals a game. Either way, it was no fun because, while I couldn't score, I could dominate on defence.

So I figured I was ready for world class. Put together a revamped West Brom team, and proceeded to lose six games in a row. Some of them were close (playing 6 minute halfs, losing 2-1 and 3-2) and then sometimes I'd get trounced (4-0 Leeds, 5-1 Arsenal) and get so frustrated I had the top five leaders in cards. My main problem was piteous defence (you all know - the well placed through ball to the middle of the 18.)

I began playing a series of friendlies to try and bolster my skills. I solidified the backline somewhat, and now I am losing 1-0 and 2-0 on four minute halfs, while having an equal part of the posession and shots on goal.

I guess I just haven't been able to score. I seldom score off crosses (is it the through ball button or the shot button you tap?) and have a real hard time putting shots on net (the Wingman I bought sucks goats and the button sticks.)

How do you guys score the bulk of your goals? Crosses? Runs? Throughballs? Do you work the field wide or play it up the middle? Do you send you backline ahead for support? Is there a secret to shooting I haven't picked up on?

Anyway, I'm wondering how everyone else fared in their first professional season. I don't mind a challenge, but I do want to be moderately competitive and it's pretty joyless when you haven't scored in four or five games.

I've read the Tips section, and haven't, unfortunately, found it much good. If anyone has strategy thoughts, let me know.

By the way, the game, in my mind, is outstanding. It really captures some of the subtle nuances of football, like not presenting the ball, lateral movement and so on. The worst things would have to be the non-existent heading system and the menu, which was obviously created by an orangutang and is ridiculously hard to navigate. Worst-menu-ever!
