Barthez

If United can get a suitable replacement, then it's curtains for Barthez.

He does have his moments. He is one of the most athletic goalkeepers ever and his kicking can be brilliant. He isn't too bad in a penalty shootout either (although we might all be starving with him cleaning his boots every kick).

However, he is very inconsistent. He makes more howlers than most other top goalkeepers, and he is not very tall, making him susceptible to crosses and high balls (Figo). His positioning ranges from mediocre to absolutely diabolical (v Real Madrid) and he seems to suffer from concentration lapses.

Roy Carroll has shown at the end of the season that he can fill in for Barthez, but I think United need an interim to keep the no. 1 shirt for maybe a couple of years before the Ulsterman can become the no. 1 at Old Trafford.

The goalie I would like to see at United is Fabian Carini, young and probably the most talented south american goalkeeper. He was brought in by Arsenal last year but didn't agree on contract terms. He wanted $1 million US annually, which is very reasonable for a world class keeper. The good part is that United an probably pick him up on loan from Juventus, and wouldn't have to pay a transfer fee. :)

ahem, carini isn't at juventus anymore, he has a 3 year contract with standard liege

and anyway he wasn't that good at all in the belgium competition, what would he do in the epl ? :brow:

From what I know, he's on load to Standard Liege, I don't think Standard forked out the 5 million euro asking price. I've seen Carini at his best, he can fill in. BTW, from what I do know of the belgian competition is that Standard Liege are one of the worst teams in the league. Again, I may be wrong, I don't follow the league a great deal or have a way to find info out.

He's still young and developing, he played excellent throughout the 2 year qualifying campaign, and his performance ranked on a level with Oscar Cordoba as the two best keepers in qualifying.

United would be a good place to come into his own and establish himself as a #1 at a big club.:)

Yeah replace barthez with Tim howard:rolleyes:
Roy Caroll is turning to a quality goalkeeper in my opinion.. but i'd go for Robinson as a replacement for barthez.. hope barthez will stay though.. I mean he would have been concidered one of the best goalkeepers if he didnt make the mistakes he made in those 2 years..

'guesses'?
I think his main disadvantage is his height.. isnt he the shortest goalkeeper in the premiership?

yes guesses......thats why sometimes he makes really spectacular saves but lets in goals that should be stopped...you can call it anticipation when he saves it but when he doesnt he just guessed wrong

and standard ain't one of the worst team in the league, in fact they're on of the biggest clubs in belgium, they didn't do well this year but at the start of the season they targeted the title but only reached mid-table and believe me, carini was far to be the best gk in the league

If United are to let Barthez go, the best thing they can do is bring in a big name goalkeeper, preferably with experience in the Premiership.

Because otherwise, there isn't much point. If Ricardo is to stay United already have a Spanish international goalkeeper, and in Roy Carroll, they have one of the best, young and upcoming goalies in the country. The Ulsterman can potentially eventually fill the boots of the legend that is Peter Schmeichel, provided he can iron out some of his faults in his game.
