GameCam has a free and pro version, obviously you will pay $$$ for the pro version. The only difference between the two being with free version your options are limited but still freeware (I think) not a trial version of pro.

VirtualDub and Super are freeware. Your money stays in your pocket :)

or you could give fraps and animation shop a go...
