The Darkness are overhyped wank made famous by their Spinal Tap image (parody of 80s cock-rock).
Their music is half-decent mind, fairly well written but generally lacking in substance imo. Obviously my opinion isn't yours and neither should it be.
Needless to say, I definately wouldn't buy their records until they stop playing for the cameras and start playing for the mics and neither would I rate their guitar solos in the top 50% of guitar solos. If it's guitar solos you want the Jimi's your man. Other's such as Vai and Satriani are reknowned for their technical expertise, but their music is nothing but a vessel for them to show off their ability with the guitar and therefore I like their music less than I like that of the Darkness.
Plenty of better guitar soloists out there than Hawkins, and plenty of better guitar solos than theirs too. If you want a great modern guitarist then I personally like the style of Ben Harper, he's not as rock'n'roll mind.

Well uhm Shifty Hawkins is definately not the man we're after here.
I agree with you that the Darkness are a band who have reignited guitar rock music with their guitar solo's, something which was needed after all the chainsaw-ish guitar music of bands like Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit. Hell, even Metallica stopped Hammett from soloing on their latest record! But Daniel Hawkins definately doesn't write the best guitar solo's.
Monkee mentions Jimi (everybody bow, now!). Jimi is god, but, even though his solo's are great, they're not my favourites. I'm more a fan of the technical players like Zakk Wylde, Hammett, Vai, Buckethead and Satriani. However a combination of technical ability and bluesy influences I find nicest. It's awesome if you're able to play at warp speed (because I know how hard it is), but if you put no feeling in the notes you're playing it's pointless. For me Slash combines abilty and playing with feeling the best, therefor he's my favourite player. Solo's as the ones in November Rain, Estranged, Sweet Child Of Mine, Civil War and many other GNR songs I can hear all day.
