Best Keeper in the World (1st of a 9-part series)

Well I am back so I thought I'd start a little discussion here... it's the 1st of a 9-part series.

Basically, write down your top 5 keepers in the world (write something about them if you like), then list a few under-rated keepers (up and comers, etc.) and maybe a few over-rated keepers, etc. etc.

alright, here's my list...


TOP 5
1. Fabien Barthez - Man Utd, France
Well, he's won Euro and WC so it's hard to argue with that... people say he is over-rated - I highly disagree. He proved how good he is to me this year at ManU with the subpar defensive performances. And you gotta love the flair.

2. Oliver Kahn - Bayern Munchen, Germany
I didn't really think he was appreciated but winning CL should give him the respect he deserves.

3. Jerzy Dudek - Feyenoord (for now), POLSKA
Maybe it's a bit high for him - but then again, why would Arsenal and Barca want him so bad?? I watch every Poland game - trust me, he is good.

4. Francesco Toldo - Fiorentina/Barca, Italy
He went from Italy no.3 to being regarded as one of the best goalies in the world. If not for him, Italy does not go to the Euro finals.

5. Iker Casillas - Real Madrid, Spain
He's so young and he's only going to get better. Scary, really.


Under-rated
- Adam Matysek - Bayer Leverkusen, Polska
Seriously, Poland is blessed to have two world-class goalies... if you saw the Poland-Norway you would realize how good he really is. Too bad HJ Butt is coming in to Leverkusen this summer so Matysek should find a new club.

Up-and-coming
- the obvious ones to name are Casillas, Abbiati and Frey. All young, all on good teams...

1. Pascal Zuberbuhler (just kidding)

Overrated Keepers: Seaman for sure, ummmm Van der Sar

Underrated Keepers: Neil Sullivan, Wattereus, Konig, Kawaguchi

For the future: Frey, Carlos Kameni, Cassilas

1. Oliver Kahn - I thought that he was the best even before the CL Final. There is now no question in my mind.

2. Fabian Barthez

3. Gianluigi Buffon - He was selected ahead of Toldo for Euro 2000, plus he's 22.

4. Francesco Toldo

5. Jose Luis Chilavert - The man takes penalties for gosh sakes!

 

[Neutral LFC]

1.) Oliver Kahn - prob. the best keeper I have seen in my life (even better than that red-nosed fella who used to play for United - which is no easy feat).

2.) Buffon

3.) Toldo

4.) Barthez - a tad bit overrated IMO, needs to improve his kicking and he has a lot of Bruce Grobelaar in him but he's still an excellent shot stopper...unless Steven Gerrard is shooting from 35 yards out....

5.) Shay Given - second best keeper in the EPL just watch him play - if he got to play behind a solid defense he could be the best in the world. No, I am not on drugs.

Overrated: Chilavert, David 'Still crap' James, Van der Sar, Seaman.

Underrated: Chris Kirkland (better than Robinson), Neil Sulivan, Sorenson.

I have yet to see Dudek play, but I hear he is bloody incredible.

Chilavert is a great keeper, can't believe I forgot to mention him!

Thought of another underrated keeper, probably the third best in the Premier League, Estonia's Mart Poom. He's done a great job for Derby.

Kirkland is certainly another great youngster, definately better than Robinson. Gillet is another great young keeper.

Oliver Kahn would unfortuntely get my number one choice. Scary Aryan barstard. I can think of no-one else with the same intimidation. Would you want to take a penalty against him?

I can't believe I forgot Canizares. He would bump Chilavert down to #6 on my list. He impresses me each time I see him on the pitch.

Chilavert perhaps WAS great, but he didn't make too many waves when he came to Europe. I like the man, but I don't think he's a great keeper (no matter how many goals he scores).
