Better Online Connections

I run Fifa at 800 X 600, commentary etc, 32 bit desktop settings,with Zone Alarm firewall on 512k broadband. I get lag on the vast majority of connections that my oponent doesnt seem to suffer from. Is this something we have to put up with or can you consistently get good connections. In the game rooms my connection is around the 200 mark which is pretty OK, and I usually only play people whos connections are around that or lower so how can I get the best consistently?
