I think if anything, contemporary home-nation politics is seperating from London, not strengthening the ties between them and to the Monarchy.

Craig Gordon and Maik Taylor because English keepers not named "Foster" are crap. Seriously, Paul Jones would start for England.

Gordon would be my first "non English" player in the team.

idea of the UK team i think is a great idea for 2012 SAF already been asked to manage them

but in general dunno general opinion but across the water majority see it as a joke

ie.andy playing today wearing the scottish colours but comes up beside his name UK?
why cant he represent his country of his birth??
anyways back to soccer
think it would work well in general but burnout not be a problem with the euros on?

We are less than a year away from the Olympics and it looks like we will see a Team Great Britain. While the Scottish players will probably not join up, it is looking increasingly likely that the Welsh and Northern Irish players will tell their FA to stuff it and play under the Union Carlos. So, what do you think the squad will look like? Players must be 23 or younger, and if I'm not mistaken 3 overage players are allowed.

Starting with the overage players, I don't think there is much room for debate on any of these places: Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, and Wayne Rooney. Giggs so he has a chance to win something at the international level, Beckham because he's campaigning for it and would be great to have out there, and I just heard a Rooney rumor today, but think it would be fantastic. I'm sure SAF would be furious if it happened, but Team GB don't really have anyone else to play #10. The only possible debate could be replacing one of them (Rooney or Becks I'd say) with Joe Hart to have a good keeper.

As for the lineup, I'd think something like this:

Rooney-Wellbeck
Bale-Cleverly-Giggs-Sturridge
Gibbs-Smalling-Jones-Walker
???

To me that looks a pretty strong squad, obviously it wouldn't be a traditional 4-4-2, but one that is fluid and resembles a 4-2-3-1.

Yeah I think a few of them have already said they will play. I'm sure if a Scottish player gets asked to represent his country in the frigging Olympics he's going to say yes. Biggest competition in the world, your not about to say no.

maybe fletcher, what's the rule in regards to age, if any? Do so many of them have to be under a certain age?

*edit* never mind just read what you put... 3 players over 23. Rooneys got to be one of them...

Wilshire and Ramsey got to be good contenders too.

Gareth Bale has stated his support for the Team GB idea a few months ago, likening it to the Lions Rugby Union representative team which only plays against the Wallabies (Australia), All Blacks (New Zealand) and Springboks (South Africa) in one-off alternate tours, which also take place every four years.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/may/28/gareth-bale-gb-olympic-team

I think that to compensate for both sides, instead of having only a team GB or only a single Home Nation squad in all football tournaments; Team GB should just be like the Lions (although obviously without players from the Republic of Ireland in the former; as the Irish Rugby Union which contributes to the Lions is an all-Ireland team), only playing Olympic tournaments if one of the four FIFA home nations qualifies through sub-23 UEFA competitions.

EDIT: It also appears that Scotland is still opposed to sending any of its players as part of a Team GB, yet they have Hampden Park as an Olympic footballing venue?

In the squad, sure, but hard to see him in the first team over Cleverly, Ramsay, and a healthy Wilshere.

I bet you wouldn't start Iniesta in team Catalonia too.

I'm not too sure, actually, depends on how they perform this season, for Ramsey and Bannan it's their first as starters in a Prem club, and Cleverly is still developping too, and we'll have to see if Wilshere plays, what with the Euro and all.

Yeah, I didn't mention Wilshere in my XI because I just don't think he'll be playing. Even if he comes back healthy in January or February I don't think it would be responsible to have him play Internationals this summer.

you know he's not Catalan, right?

Iniesta is from the CC.AA. of Murcia. There are a couple of little towns in Murcia near the Valencian Community who speak Català/Valencià blaverista, but i don't think Iniesta is from one of them. Arnau probably know best about that.

Yes, he's from Fuentealbilla, a small town near to Albacete.

De la Peña (Cantabrian) also played for Catalonia. It's unofficial so everyone can play, Messi must.

BTW:
How long untill we see these two teams at Euros/WC/Olympics?

Also, there may be the possibility of seeing a Greenland team one day soon, but without Gronkjaer.

EDIT: If Messi were to play once for Catalonia, the Argentine press would have a field day. They already seem to question his patriotism for the Rio Plata, since he left Rosario to go to Barca as a child; even though he had his growth deficiency illness.
