Can someone advise on defending?

I have reached 'professional' level in FIFA2003 and now I find it almost impossible to stop the darting runs through the middle by the 'machine' forwards.

None of my controls seems to activate defenders quickly enough. I have a Thrustmaster Firestorm Gamepad and I have suspected that maybe the facilities on that are inadequate for the game.

Can anyone share experiences of either the gamepad pr how to defend at pro level...or both

That might be a last resort but I was hoping someone might have some advice on techniques without resorting to cheats

i can't advise coz i don't play fifa 2003 i play 02 & 04

I have given up all idea of FIFA 2003 being a fair battle of skills when at professional level the range of abilities the maching can employ compared to the human agent is laughably greater.

I do actually win some games now at pro level but I still find the differences in such things as ability to move forwards en bloc into position to receive an attacking ball, clever dribbles etc..interceptions by defenders, so ludicrously biased in favour of the machine that I have lost virtually all interest in the game as a contest.
