Man, if I ever free a genie or something my first and only wish would be a luxury hotel and all access pass for the Cannes Film Festival - just the most glorious event in the film calander. The only festival which properly recognised films like Pulp Fiction, Easy Rider etc etc. I love France, I love films, I love Cannes!

And the lineup looks ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC this year. Not only is there the full cut of Death Proof, but there's the new Coen brothers film No Country for Old Men, which by all accounts is a spectacular return to form, a brilliant looking Iranian animated feature called Persepolis, Michael Moore's new movie Sicko (I've been waiting so long for the next Moore film), A Mighty Heart which is quite good by all accounts though I dont really fancy it, Control, Paranoid Park (apparantly a return to form by Van Sant) etc etc. There is also a brilliant looking film called the Diving Bell and the Butterfly which is getting unbelievable reviews over here, most people seem to thing it has the Palm d'Or in the bag.

Also read recently that there are two more Coen brothers films in the pipeline - a CIA black comedy and an uber secret project - both coming out in a year or so. Also Scorsese is working on a feature with Mick Jagger after finishing his Rolling Stones documentary, and he launched his society for the preservation of old/neglected films the other day and Cannes, with some due to be out on DVD before too long. If there's one man who's taste in lost films I would trust absolutely, it's Martin Scorsese.

All in all I wish I was there and cant wait for some of these movies to hit the cinemas!

How long has this **** been going on, for about a week now? Is it getting great coverage over there in your country? Here it's been really pathetic to be honest. Even the IFC which used to do an awesome job at covering the Cannes and other festivals has been seriously lacking this year. Hell, I wouldn't even ******* know that it was going on if it weren't for the internet.

Anyway, I'm really lookin forward to that Coen bros movie. I heard that it's been getting an early awesome response from the critics and goers. Also excited about that Gus Van Sant flick since I'll just about devour anything of his, the Catherine Breillat flick too...that bitch makes some profound fapping material....best porn director around imo....oh, that Blueberry flick looks very intriguing with that phenomenal cast aswell, man.

That too....don't know if it's opening at the Cannes....probably at the TIFF
I also just saw some clips of Ocean's 13....sheesh. That thing could be pure vomit and I'd still pay to see it, man. It's about as critic proof as they get......just DIG that cast, man....wow.....it's bloated.....even saturated, but I still can't help but drool in anticipation over it. I'm incapable of disliking this trilogy, man...seriously.

I'm glad that Nazi bitch Julia Robert's was excluded from this one.......boy do I abhor that twat.

We didnt get great coverage to be honest, just a few features on culture shows.

Diving Bell didnt win the palm, it went to that Romanian film which I didnt know much about but which looks really good

To be honest I find Van Sant a bit hit and miss - loved Elephant and Drugstore Cowboy, not so keen on Last Days.

I've seen most of his movies and he's been pretty flawless as far as Im concerned

Drugstore Cowboy.....9/10

My Own Private Idaho....8ish/10

To Die For......9/10.....highly underrated

Good Will Hunting ....8ish/10

Psycho......let's skip this one for now.....an aberration or two shouldn't spoil the whole bunch

Finding Forrester.....saw it with my class.....7ish/10

Gerry....weird little gem.....7/10

Elephant......8/10

That's the thing with making movies now adays, man. One or two subpar offerings and you're quickly labelled a hack or a no-good-for-nothing piece of ****. That development/apprenticeship period is almost non-existent. Whereas in the past, the olden days, you could put out a dozen stinkers and still have a job. But now, man, you better have an Ocsar-worthy movie or two, or else you're ******* done.

I give a lot of latitude to directors or actors that I like, you know? One or two ****ups aren't gonna dissuade me from still liking them or seeing their movies.

Oh yeah I agree totally, I dont condemn the man at all and would still rush to see one of his films, but right now I'd say his hit vs miss ratio is about 50% in my book which isnt enough to make me a particularly devoted fan.

Personally I would consider a director great no matter how much trype he had made, provided there were one or two gems in between it all.

EDIT: I dont quite have the same leniancy with actors - I can take a couple of bad movies, but when they start selling out and doing adverts or crappy blockbusters, my liking for them takes an immediate nosedive, no matter how much I loved them in the past.

hmm.....come to think of it, I might feel the same way regarding actors in that respect....hmmm....maybe not....I don't know, man.

Let me ask you a question. Do you now hold Depp in lesser esteem since he's become the butt-pirate boy for Disney and been hawking that Pirates of the Caribbean blockbuster for like the last 4yrs or so? Has his career been blemished and tainted in your eyes?

See, I was a bit disappointed with Ed Norton for taking part in Death to Smoochie and that Italian job flick....they were both an embarrassment to 'em in my opinion, but then he quickly absolved and redeemed himself with that ******* gem of a little movie Down in the Valley, and then topped it off with a powerful and memorable performance in the Illusionist....just like that, he was an acting God to me again, man.....all was forgiven.

milyang's juhn doh-hyun won something for her part.

you can never go wrong with korean sentimentality in movies.

and you can't go wrong with abortions in movies, especially if it's of romanian context.

EDIT: screw that rolling stones movie. that dylan documentary was ok, but i refuse to watch/endorse a movie around a dousche like jagger.

if anyone's into it though, maybe a review of stones rock and roll circus is in order?

Hmmm at present my opinion of Depp has not been too badly damaged by the Pirates movies, because I still think he's ******* good in them, but I havent yet seen the last one and that might just be too much. I do think he does too many movies actually, perhaps he should be more selective, but he's always watchable.

As to Norton, I recognise what a great actor he is but I've never really latched onto him or been a huge fan myself so it didnt destraught me too much to see him sell out a bit. I am, however, quite pissed at him more recently because he seems to be taking the easiest, safest roles - Illusionist, Painted Viel etc - and not pushing himself or moving forward as an actor at all.

The worst thing for me is whenever I start to take a young new actress seriously and develop a certain liking or respect for her, she always goes and ******* blows her dignity by doing a ****ty Lorial commercial - Cruz, Johannson, Theron etc - I just dont get why actresses of that calibre need to demeen themselves with these ads.

Bah, Sympathy for the Devil is one of the all time great rockumentarys, and Performance is an absolute masterpiece with a brilliant performance from Jagger. As a result I'm now magnetically drawn to Stones movies.

Apparantly Scorsese's next project is gonna be a feature starring Jagger, and I for one welcome the news
