Centre Defensive Midfielder / Stopper ?

RUSI

El Merengue Argentino
I have been a Left-Back / Left-Mid my whole life.

My coach wants me to play as a centre-mid, a position I have never played.

Anyone got tips about the position I can get please?

thanks :)

Always give a hundred procent, because you can't afford to miss many close battles...keep having tight marking and don't hold onto the ball for along period of time

Thats the tips I got for now I think

and yeah, search for easy alternatives

Well that's my favourite position.

Your job is to break up attacks before they can happen. Like Makalele. You've gotta be able to read the game well, be able to see an attack before it happens.

Try to stay on your feet when you tackle as well, going to ground and not making the tackle will leave your defense open. Only slide in when he's past you and you KNOW you'll get the ball.

When you get the ball and you see space run into it. You should start each counter attack, if there's no space, look for the easiest pass forward if possible. Otherwise back to your 'keeper is safe bet.

That's all I can think of right now.

The biggest problem you might have is adjusting to a central position. I always play right back and whenever i go into a central position i get burned cuz im used to being near the touchline....

so if u can settle in with playing in the centre of the field you should be alright from there, but don't play with the ball alot, because if you do and lose it, your defence is gonna be pissed

Also try to remember your job is to hold the midfield mate, don't get too sucked over either way, I don't know exactly what the strategy's gonna be but I mean Davids for example is always on the left side, but if your more central then i'd take Lele as a good example, others like Cambiasso aswell are good people to watch. Good luck buddy.

your a madrid fan, lol...just watch the way gravesen plays....if a defender pushes up you fill his spot, sit in front of the defence, don't hold the ball for long periods of play, and just breakdown the oppositions attack and give the ball to your attackers for quick counter-attacks

just remember that you've gotta be the most diverse player, in that you're the first real defense, and you're also the start of the offense, so you can't let yourself be up in the offense all the time, and have the other team overrun your defense. like Dreath said, try to stay on your feet unless you absolutely must go to ground and you know you'll make the tackle.

you also have to be aware of the defense behind you. if your opponents attack and your team semi-clears the ball, and they get it back and your defense is out of position, you've gotta contain their offense and make sure that they can't attack until your defense is in shape again: therefore you need to have your head on a swivel and be able to see when your defense is not set. knowing when to contain and when to be aggressive is one of the biggest parts of your position. if your team is down late in the game and the other team is just trying to play possession, you need to get the ball back. if you're holding onto a lead, you need to make sure that they don't get the opportunity to score, even if it means making them keep possession. in that situation it's better for them to pass the ball back to a defender or midfielder rather than you trying to win the ball, because if you miss then you leave your defense outnumbered.

above all this, never give up or jump out of tackles or let your guard down. you've gotta be the toughest, and smartest player on the pitch.

hope this helped

And sometimes, when you stopped an attack, you can go with the ball and start a counter-attack. And when is a corner for your team, you can make a surprise and appear in the box without a player marking you. CoCu-sTyLe :)

Well Rusi, now I can learn something from this thread. Came back from the first practice of the season today and found out I'm gonna be CM. One of the things I can tell you, passed on from my coach, is that in our position we will need to seriously need to gain stamina because we will probably do the most running on the whole team.

congrats Henry#14, it's a fun position, one of my favorites (other than keeping).

this is the 1000th post in this forum.

my last few pieces of advice. Have a good attention span, you need to keep an eye on the ball at all times while adjusting your postion on the pitch to suit the play. Like everyone else said, scrap. Your not their to look good or play football, your their to win the ball

Forza Suarez! (ps brotha can you spare a dime?)
you cant afford any stupid mistakes. be as aggressive as you can. if you miss a tackle and the guy gets passed you keep chasing him, contain him as much as you can until help from the defense arrives. Vision is needed too to exploit those quick breaks. hope this helps

Well the one thing that worries me is that I have sub-standard defensive skills compared to what I can offer to the attack, but I'm working on it. Hopefully I can convince the coach to let me play a role that won't require me to defend as much.

your coach must have chosen this special role for you because he thinks you have what it takes.

Trust your vision and improve your stamina. You'll get used to it the more you play.
