Mourinho wary of Italians

Jose Mourinho has admitted that he wants to avoid an Italian side in the quarter finals of the UEFA Champions League.

Chelsea qualified thanks to a scintillating 4-2 second leg win over Spanish outfit Barcelona, but Mourinho is insistent that such a performance could not occur against the defensively superior Serie A sides.

Milan, Internazionale and Juventus are all in the draw, which takes place at 11am on Friday, and have won the European Cup a total of ten times between them.

It is this European pedigree that the Portuguese tactician fears, and he admitted his team would have to pull out all the stops were they to face any of the Italian giants.

"You always want to play the big teams, the big managers and the big players but I don't like to play Italians," said Mourinho.

"If you play Italian teams you can expect a perfect defensive team, they are the most difficult teams to play against in Europe, as you can see by their records.

"Playing an Italian team is not the same as a Spanish or French, we must be a team with thinking qualities.

"You can't play with the heart or by instinct; you need to be clever enough to play with the brain."

In Porto's remarkable Champions League triumph under Mourinho in 2004 they avoided any of the Serie A sides, although it is likely that if he is to claim this year's trophy as well the Chelsea boss will not be as lucky.

Then Milan will face PSV in the semis. With Juve meeting Chelsea.

Then the finale, AC Milan - Chelsea

Looks like its going to be a great quarter final. Imo, all the teams are strong.


I hope Inter will qualify, as i support them as well...but, i'm still weary of Mancini's almost random line-ups every game .

Chelsea is going to be a worthy foe, Mourinho seems to know what he's doing, and they held out Barcelona quite nicely.

Milan, as usual, just like Milan. Definately one of the stronger sides, didn't even concede a goal against Man UTD

Juventus, what can we say about Juve. Their last game was an extra time thriller, definately favorites in this round as well.

Liverpool has been surprisingly good in Europe this year, if Liverpool want to play strong, Gerrard's going to need to be in top form

Bayern has seem dominating in Champions League, i wouldn't be surprised if Bayern goes on to the next round. Makaay is a key.

Lyon played a relatively weak team, Bremen. They literally tore them apart in the second leg. Although the results show a positive entry for Lyon into this round, they will have their work cut out for them. These teams are ones that won't be easy to breach.

PSV in my opinion, compartively is the weakest of the 8, however, not a force to be reckoned with. They have a dangeroud counter attack and know how to use it well. Definately dark horses imo.

Im still not clear on it, is it drawn in a bracket type system, so its already clear who the team who progresses will face? (eg. winner of game 1 will face winner of game 2) or is their another draw, i can remember what they did last year.


As for pairings, i dont care who Juve, Inter or Milan face, as long as its not eachother (I'd prefer at least one of them to draw PSV)

I see this draw happening (i was right last time about Juve-Real and Mil-UTD):

Juve - Liverpool

(if PSV and Liverpool draw eachother I'll lose it)

To be honest I'm not a happy camper with the news that Inter has drawn Milan for the Quarterfinal stage. But this tie brings only one word to mind: REVENGE. It's time for this Inter squad to step up and knock Milan the f*ck out.

Though atleast one thing is nice about being drawn as a participant in the 2nd quarterfinal. We will avoid either Chelsea or Juve (if they get through) in the semi's while we will have to play either Lyon or PSV (all considering we of course get through and that will be no easy task.) I think we got the hardest draw of the bunch, after Milan that is.

But honestly, its the other way round.

Sheva will return right before this CL game againts Brescia. He will play that game, regain his form.. And then he will BLAST INTER OFF
