Chat in online play

Hey, got a question - how can one chat during online match, besides those preconfigured messages? I noticed that my opponents frequently use that, but i cannot figure out the way to do it.

that doesn't work i swear , surely if u were pressing a or wotever to shoot , u would have a ton of a's on the screen , u must have to press something, type , and then press enter.
it has never worked for me , people say like press r2 or summat then type ,but that doesn't work either

Well I tried pressing space, nothing happened aside for substitution icon coming up, I also tested typing and pressing enter afterwards to no avail as well.

u just type, make sure the u click the mouse first then it will work
