Cheating to Win

I know there are a lot of threads in here complaining about the game, but I thought I'd bring up a topic that, for me, has been a weakness in FIFA for a long time.

I remember playing FIFA 2000-2006 or so and shutting off my game out of shear frustration when the CPU would "cheat." A lot of you probably know what I'm talking about. I believe it was FIFA 2000 that would allow the CPU to slide tackle you viciously and never get carded, and sometimes not even get called for a foul. Then in 2002 the good teams would score goals from absurd distances. Almost all of these games had a "cheat" where you would suddenly lose control of your player, allowing the opponent to score. By this I mean, you player would come to a near halt for no reason, allowing the CPU to reach a ball or blow right by you. There were other forms of cheating, but I feel I've made my point.

The creators, instead of making the opposing team smarter, just gave them special abilities and advantages.

FIFA 07, my favorite installment to date, was finally rid of this. Sure, the game became quite easy to beat, but I don't think I ever quit mid-game. Gone were the cheap shots, referee bias, and loss of control.

Now in FIFA 08, the cheating has unfortunately returned. I've quit out of frustration a few times now. Some of you might say I don't like the challenge. What I don't like is the huge advantage the CPU has. They could have made the AI smarter, but instead they made them more able. I refer to:
1. The goalkeeper "guessing" which side you will shoot 95% of the time on a 1-on-1.
2. The defense stealing the ball any time there's contact. It's impossible to hold off a defender with your arm anymore. If you get close to them, you've lost possession. Of course, this is FAR from the case when they are the ones attacking.
3. When you switch to the last man on defense to prevent a breakaway, your player will frequently move the OPPOSITE direction you are pointing, leaving the attacker completely alone.
4. On more than one occasion, the CPU's defense has committed a blatent penalty on me in the box and nothing was called.

Because of cheats 1,2 and 4, I'm finding it near impossible to score on the Pro level (as a disclaimer, I used to dominate 07 on World Class), unless I get a lucky bounce or steal. The defense seems nearly impenetrable due to the super-defenders, and when I do penetrate the goalie is sure to save the shot.

These are cheats that EA intentionally built into the game, and I for one am sick of it.

CARRICK

Do NOT give me Upton Park stadium.
I have to agree with you here mate, it is ridiculous.

I also managed to master the world class mode on FIFA 07 but that is never going to happen on FIFA 08, the opposition is ridiculously difficult

I have attempted to beat Arsenal (as West Ham) so many times now but each time i have lost (and lost badly) - so very frustrating!

Its time to hit back at the computer and its cheating ways!!!

You know what EA pretty much did?

Last year, with 07, they listened to people that the game was too easy. So, naturally, they made this year harder.

However, they didn't make the game harder by making the game more realistic (as it would have been the logical thing to do), but the very lazy producers instead made the game harder by making the computer like a god.

They pretty much made the game harder but in all the wrong ways. EA SPORTS: 1 step forward, 2 steps back :kader:

Very good post Sevillista...
Fifa 07 is by far the best fifa ... Fifa 08 is just frustrating because it's not realistic...The main complain that I have is that a 2nd class striker can dribble the whole back line of a great team without being stopped...
I have deinstalled this game and won't play it again...
EA has clearly made the choice of the other platforms...
The PC version is a joke ( gameplay wise and graphic wise )
By the way you should try PES 08...What you're looking for is maybe there...
For me, it's a revelation and the in game editing is top class..

I whole heartedly agree with you sentiments especially point no. 2.
I especially think the goalie skills are too exceptionally good. It's not just the fact that they manage to save every pinpointed top-corner shot by the like of Messi and Pato but the fact you can kick the ball full power from 2m and they will always deflect it out for a corner. I've seen this happen at least 100 times yet I've never seen a keeper get a glove on it and the ball still go in the back of the net.

lol one thing other than the one's you mentioned that annoys me most is the CPU gets freekicks for EVERYTHING...you (I) can't shoulder tackle someone without givin them a freekick :S and then when I get blatantly assaulted in and around the penalty box nothings given? :S The 'keeper's jst a joke as well like you've said... I don't think there's 1 'keeper in this world that's ANYWHERE near these standards xD. Fair enough 1 or 2 great saves but c'mon when it happens 10-15 times in a match it's jst takin the piss... I'm losin games where I have had 20 shots (15+ of which are on target) and I'll score like 1 if I'm lucky... and the CPU will have had like 2 shots on target and will have scored 2? Jst annoyin ¬_¬

Yep, both in world class!

In fairness it was a backs to the wall job all the way - my keeper (Rob Green) pulled off some critical saves and Barca hit the woodwork several times

However, i have tried about 15 times now and STILL cannot get any result against Arsenal - not even a draw, i only ever lose

Frustrating!

This My own cheat in beating the CPU in world class.....

1st is my Camera Angle - Brodcasting, Height 10/10, the the other side 0/10

2nd is i go for all out attack in first 15mins with the Pressing defence tactics

3rd after the 15mins i change to 5-4-1 , nomatter the score i use this till half time to wear out my opponents

4th if im losing by HT i change to the 2nd tactics again and try to score, if im winning i go to 442 and try to keep the score the same,

I agree the FIFA 08 AI is quite under par. In 07 they used to play long balls and take longer shots, now if u play world class on 08 it's always quick passing, dribbling and close range finishing. Hardly a cross or long ball EVER, which is really unrealistic especially in the Premiership.

What frustrates me is that their strikers can take on defenders so easily that sometimes a single player dribbles 3 of mine and score. I've learnt to stop this by backtracking with the player, blocking his path and marking spaces rather than trying to tackle, but it's kind of unrealistic that a Coca-cola League 2 player can make mincemeat out of Toure and Gallas.

They've also made shooting a lot worse in 08, in 07 I used Nedved and scored some really sweet long shots, but in this one no matter how good the player is, 90% of the time the ball will go over.

But it's not so bad once you get used to it, I suggest what you guys do is play on World Class/Professional but set the goalkeeper on Semi-pro. You can easily capitalize on chances because their defense has not been improved since 07, just do some quick pass-and-run and you'll find yourself beating keepers in 1 v 1 no problem :D

Hmm i agree with your points to an extent. I think that FIFA 08 has become a lot more tactical, in that in FIFA 07 you could run with any player on turbo pretty much the length of the ground and score a goal, whereas now it takes a lot more skill. I play with my own custom team 2.5 stars and am doing manager mode working my way up through from Coca-Cola league 2 (i won the league) on professional difficulty and professional goal keeper, and i rarely lose its usually a 1-1 draw (im currently 4 wins 8 draws 0 losses in Coca-Cola league 1). I play in triangles and it works perfectly for me, you just have to build the play up.

As for beating keepers one on one, the trick is to not get too close and use the finesse shot. Works all the time for me. Either that or pass around the keeper to another player running into the box. There are some ridiculous saves i admit, but still at the moment i prefer fifa 08 to 07.

i totally agree that the cpu goalkeeper this year sometimes really reminds me how the goalkeeper in fifa2003 react if ABSOLUTELY_PERFECT_GOALIES = 1 is in soccer.ini :p yeah this year the game becomes more tactical than the previous year.. can't easily to execute the long pass but still can do it at the right time and right place.. especially with the right player in the right situation.. but the referee is so bias :f***:

Having tough matches is OK when you play against better teams but it's not realistic at all to struggle to beat lower teams...
What's the use to have so much player's attributes from 0 to 100 and to see that makes no difference in game ?
All the teams play the same way, all the moves are the same...
Back in fifa 2002 there was at least a noticeable difference ( it had only 7 or 8 different attributes noted from 1 to 7 )
This game is made for people who play a lot and want to have a challenge ( that's why the CPU is obviously cheating ) , not for the people who like to have a realistic game...

typical game on PS2 using the pro mode-

you take the ball past midfield, have it taken away, they pass to one of their strikers, and then I have to have 3 guys try to take the ball off him as he charges towards the net...and if I dont manage get the ball away from him with these 3 players, then he scores

not very realistic

and neither is the superman goalkeeping

Really? Because it's not uncomon to seen really good teams strugle against lower teams. happens all the time.

One of my favourites now is the tackling

- CPU simply closes down, he has 3-4 defending players around my player, so i rarely can do anything against them
- Sometimes, CPU's defenders doesn't even connect with the ball when tackling me, but no foul or anything, of course not...and by surprise, the ball bounces to another of cpu's players, or he kicks my player, and simply runs past me to the ball
- When i tackle CPU's players, usually
The ball rolls back to an opponent player
The ball ridicilously bounces about 50meters, throw in to CPU
I tackle cpu's player, but he immediately tackles back, and i don't have a chance to do so
I tackle cpu's player sometimes about 5-6 times, but the c_cks_cker still runs with the ball towards my goal
When i try a sliding tackle, usually he gets a freekick and scores, no matter what distance it is, and who(and what rating) is my goalkeeper.
- But sometimes i can't even tackle the b!tch, because a 70 rated player simply runs past a 85-90 rated defender of mine, not with trick or something, simply walks past them

I disagree.

When I first started playing FIFA 08 I was dominated by the CPU at pro level but I have overcome this. I'm able to score one to two goals a game.

With regards to:

1. Hit the ball along the ground. In xbox 360: hold the top left trigger on the back of the paddle.
2. The defence is quite good. Especially at slide tackles. The way you get around this is by controlling your offence 10 yards out of the 18 yard box ... passing between your midfielders. And once you see a striker open pass it to him and one time it.

People are sayin that you can set the goalkeeper to a level of his own - how do ya do this? (Xbox 360 btw)
