Should be a fun game to watch. I wish you guys were playing in the middle game because I'm not positive I'll be able to watch the fireworks today.

Cech
Ferreira - Alex - Terry - Cole
Essien - Mikel - Lampard
Anelka - Drogba - Malouda

Hilario, Ivanovic, van Aanholt, Zhirkov, Benayoun, Kalou, Sturridge

Everyone but Bosingwa is fit, I dunno why Paulo starts over Iva.

Halftime, 2-0. Malouda and Drogba. We're looking comfotable although not doing more than we need to. Everyone looks pretty good, not at their best, although a couple of good moments from pretty much everyone, especially Cole and Malouda. Ferreira is not good enough to be our starting RB, he's a good back-up for the fullbacks, but I don't get why Iva is on the bench. Hopefully Bosingwa will be back soon.

Full-time 6-0. Malou x2, Drogba x3, Lamps.

Let me preface by saying we weren't even that good. We were good, and we took advantage of most dabngerous plays, but we weren't brilliant, and that's hugely encouraging. Benayoun, Iva and Kalou came on for Lamps, Ferreira and Drogba, only Iva was beyond invisible. I hope to see more from Kalou and Yossi, and Iva didn't look as sharp at RB as he did at CB against Utd.

Anyone, brilliant start, I hope to see a lot more of the same. I wonder where we could be if the injury gods smile at us and Drogs can keep this up. No African Cup this time around, remember.

Btw, now Neymar has said that there's no done deal, and he wants to win more stuff with Santos. Not case closed, but could be.

Seeing the lads put out a performance like that after a dismal pre-season was really satisfying to say the least. Seems like we're continuing where we left off against Wigan, scoring loads of goals for fun. Great performance from Drog, but I thought Malouda and A.Cole were just as good. Essien was definitely the driving force behind our attacks, we absolutely need him fit this season.

It'll be interesting to see where how Carlo decides to deploy Ramires. Mikel had a good game, so he'll probably rotate between him/Essien/Ramires just to keep the players fresh.

The only downside is that it was against Robbie's team. Best of luck to him and the Baggies, they actually tried to play decent football against us, and not lose their heads, playing fairly and not going into stupid challenges even if they were outplayed most of the match.

You already summarized the game pretty well Az, and I agree, we could've played better. But its definitely nice to bang in the goals early in the season, just to keep pressure on the other big teams.

Not a bad start to the season. Some lovely football from the lads, plenty of goals and total domination. The Baggies were poor to be sure, and we never seemed to get out of first gear, which made the game appear more like a training match at times. I enjoyed it though as did all the Chelsea fans in a packed Stamford Bridge.

So, 6 goals and 3 points. That'll do for starters. Well pleased.

Drogba is awesome. Been my favorite player in the EPL for years. He reminds me of Shaq on a soccer field.

Some more tidbits and news:

We will not be getting another defender. Carlo is satisfied with what we have and has specifically said that we don't need anyone else, noting Luiz as someone we aren't after. He clearly rates Bruma, and frankly, while I would like a top defender to come in, I don't want to spend 40m on one, so that's good. I hope Bruma delivers.

The club have stated their intent to help Cole improve his public image. The treatment he's been getting from the media and the public is what's made him want to leave and Chelsea want to keep him happy. It would be great if people stopped hating on him so much. He was one of the only guys to play well (not Chelsea level, but he was brilliant in comparison with the rest of the squad) at the WC.

Lamps and Drogs are doubts for the Wigan game because of past knocks. They can play, and will likely be on the bench, at least, but the club is thinking about not risking them. They have a week to rest, though, so we'll see. This will likely mean a debut Ramires. I expect and would prefer a straight Kalou and Yossi swap for those two, with Ramires getting 20 minutes or so. I don't think Ramires should start, unless it is for Mikel (unlikely), because 3 physical players who are more defensive minded seems foolish against Wigan. Benayoun is a creative, offensive player and this is a good shot for him to shot what he's got by taking the reins from midfield.

The Neymar Saga - Pele has said that he will try and talk to him and get him to stay. Santos are pissed with us but I can't imagine them rejecting an offer so close to his release clause. Our current offer stands at 24m pounds, it seems, 4 off his clause. Chelsea have said that Santos' claims are bull. Neymar has said that he wants to stay for now, his father and agent especially have said that he's going to leave, and will talk to Santos about it this week. Yesterday was when he was going to make his decision, so the deal should be closed or officially not happening this week, and considering work permit issues, if he's not announced by the match following Wigan, I will consider it case closed.

I think work permit issues can be appealed for foreign players on the grounds of 'exceptional talent'. Correct me if I'm wrong. Question is how long, with Ramires it only took a week longer if I'm not mistaken.

Nonetheless, reading several quotes from Neymar(albeit Google translated), it seems that he's not willing to sacrifice playing time and he'd rather stay at Santos, where he's an automatic starter than work his way through our squad. His family(father mostly) seems to be pushing him to join us though.

Assuming he doesn't come to us this season, next season he'll probably join the likes of Madrid, Barca and Pele would be urging to him, telling what greats club they are, so will the Santos President. It usually works out that way for Brazilians.

An interesting note tho, after our sale of Deco to Fluminese, it seems we've managed to get first refusal for the transfer of their players, could prove to be very interesting in the future. I'll look for the source.

Ramires will sport the No. 7 shirt. Hope it goes better for him than nit did for his prdecessor.
that number's been far from auspicious for you guys in the Abramovich era ... Mutu, Maniche, Sheva ... and who had it before then? Bogarde? that was a disaster too ...

surely Ramires can't continue that fine decade-long tradition? hopefully he takes up the challenge

Didn't have time before, I do now. I would like us to get a keeper that can give Cech some competition, I've been dsaying that since Cudicini left, I think. I don't get why we've bought Turnbull, even though he was free, he doesn't seem to be able to cut it. Hilario can be decent and disastrous in equal measure, so we need to cash-in on one of them, likely Turnbull, and I would like to see Begovic come in. He's looked like a good, young keeper, and he's better than either of our back-ups with more potential. It'd mean we have our worldclass keeper, an experienced back-up, and a good back-up who could challenge for the spot in the future. He's proving to be a competitor for Sorensen, and Sorensen is an excellent keeper.

I wouldn't be too disappointed if we don't get him though. I've been hearing great things about Delac, who should be arriving in 2011. He's our future No. 1 if things go right, although he's still very young, 17. So even though he's been first-choice keeper at his club at Croatia, he stil has some years ahead of him before he can be our No. 2, and I'm not content with Ross and Hilario fiulling that spot until then.

If we can land Begovic for around 5-6m, I would be pretty pleased. Especially if we can then sell Turnbull or Hilario (again, preferably Turnbull, although perhaps he should be given more time, considering he has barely featured and has only been here a year (although we wouldn't be looking at Asmir if it looked like Ross was going to cut it) for 1-2m, that would be great.

We've been linked with Rodwell for a long time now, and I don't think Moyes is willing to let him go, much less fopr cheap. I can see him costing upwards of 15m, and I don't want us paying those sums for him. He's a good, young player, but we have more of those, who are supposed to be getting their chance this year, seems unecessary, although I would welcome his transfer if the fee isn't astronomical. I see no reason to return to spending outrageous sums for players (the possible transfer fee for Neymar is pretty steep, but considering the Madrid and City explosions, there's no way to get such players for less).

I liked seeing us linked with Vaart because I wanted to get him back when he was at Hamburg and linked with us. I love Oranje and he's one of the players I like. He could offer us something different, although he'd have to adapt to the new league and formation. He's done that at Holland, Germany and Spain, so he should manage. He wouldn't cost that much because Madrid will likely be looking to trim the squad a bit, and he will probably want to go. My prefered choice, Sneijder, is too expensive, and I definitely think Vaart has good stuff to offer.

If things go like I want, we would be getting Neymar for 24m, Vaart for around 8-10m and Begovic for 6m. All in all a lot of cash spent innthe transfer window if they all go through, which isn't something I'd be too pleased about, but if that's what it takes to have a great squad, than I'm fine.

Terrible news just in.

http://www.chelseafc.com/page/LatestNews/0,,10268~2128249,00.html

Sam Hutchinson has announced his retirement at the age of 21. Seems like another occurrence of the dreadful knee injury that has plagued him so long. He'll be continually supported by the club as he'll work in our academy while studying sports science at University. Feel gutted for the lad but hopefully he becomes a top notch manager in the future.

What a shame. He was quality, even Jose predicted that he would've become a permanent member of the squad before his injury problems. Definitely won't forget the cross he put in for Lamps to side foot into goal against Pompey last season, that was sheer quality.

Such a shame, I was very optimistic about his future. All the best for him, I hope the knee doesn't give him too much trouble in the future.

Seems like Neymar opted to stay with Santos and signed a new 5 year deal with them. (Which I'm sure contains an astronomical release clause(unless Barca or Real come chiming in).

I can't help but feel like we were being used in the deal and all these rumours circulating actually helped Neymar get the best out of all this. I don't think Neymar actually wanted to join us in the first place, neither did his family, but they just wanted more money from Santos. Neymar is also being applauded by Pele, the Brazilian NT coach and the whole of Brazil because of his decision to reject us and stay.

I hope the club move their attentions to someone who really wants to join Chelsea. I'm very disappointed we haven't even made a move for Aguero, he himself expressed many times how he would love to play alongside the likes of Drog and Lamps, get the hint Roman!!

there is a ghoulish creature by the name of Moratti who has already laid his plans to get El Kun, if and when Atleti decide to listen to offers: Agüero's father-in-law was hired as a "South American scout" in 2008/2009; and though he does not do the job full-time, this Mr. Diego maintains an excellent relationship with Inter, and has been specifically tasked to do his utmost when Inter are looking to sign South American talent ...

Didn't see it, sounds like another great performance. Good on Drogs, good for Anelka and Kalou especially on getting goals. Sounds like Malou keeps on being brilliant (everyone really), and I'm thrilled that Yossi got his first goal. I hope he has a great season. Also, I hope to see more like that assist from Mikel. He's an absoulutely brilliant player, hugely underrated, and if he can keep doing stuff like that, he'll be recognised as world-class in no time.

Next week is Ramires. We beat Stoke by a huge amount last season, I'd be satisfied with a low-scoring clean-sheet, but... 18 in 3?
