Chelsea 'make £150m shopping list'

Chelsea's new owner Roman Abramovich is understood to have drawn up a £150m list of transfer targets after taking over at Stamford Bridge.
AC Milan's revelation that they had turned down a £35m bid for defender Alessandro Nesta from an "English club" pointed the finger firmly towards Chelsea.

And Chelsea are also now in a position to follow up their long-term interest in Barcelona's Patrick Kluivert and West Ham United midfield man Joe Cole.

Chelsea's name is being placed next to some of the world's most coveted transfer targets, including Arsenal pair Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira.

Also included in the Stamford Bridge speculative shopping list are AC Milan strilker Andriy Shevchenko and Juventus' Dutch international Edgar Davids.

AC Milan misfit Rivaldo has also been mentioned

Look this has already been discussed...it's all a load of media hype, just because he's a billionaire doesn't mean we'll go around spending silly money on players we don't need...he has said he'll spend money on new players but nowhere has he said Ranieri will have a blank cheque to go out and buy players.

u have no idea how annoyingly true that is :( our chairman is worth 70 million but won't even spend 300k on Lee Miller :(

lol...Stewart Milne has to be one of the the tightest chairmen in the country:p.

Luckily for Chelsea, however, Roman has said that money will be made available for new players if Ranieri wants it...so I don't think he's gonna be that tight but I also don't think he's naive enough to spend the sort of silly money the media are reporting.

The last line is hilarious.
Also, Chelsea may have the money but really should look at more possible targets. Those guys will never leave their clubs.

Buying all those players doesn't make you a great club, nor is succes garuanteed. A great club is also about arganising things properly, having a good management and stuff like that. Getting yourself a selection of star players worth of 150m clearly shows that they don't know how to (financially) manage a club. Of course this shoppinglist thing is all "news of the world/the sun" like speculation.

Roman Abromovich is not going to go into debt no matter how many players he buys. He's worth over 3 billion dollars. (He could easily afford 11 Zidanes.) Second, I seriously doubt he bought Chelsea to "make a profit". The guy owns a huge oil company and the entire Russian aluminum industry - there are thousands of better ways for him to make money. (He is also contemplating selling Chelsea Village's non-football holdings - the only profitable parts of Chelsea's parent company.) For him, Chelsea FC is a toy and he will definitely pump a lot of money into it - until he gets bored with it. BUT, even if Chelsea buy and buy and buy, because Abramovich is going to take Chelsea PRIVATE (by buying all remaining shares), he (or his company or whatever) will be responsible for the debt and it would be hard for him to sever his relationship with them and leave Chelsea in another debt crisis. Personally I don't see any (financial) downside to this. Even if you try your hardest to be pessimistic, the worst that can happen is if Chelsea try to pull a Real Madrid and just buy a bunch of stars without necessarily creating a better team. (And some may not consider that a bad thing.)

I think the wrong way for Chelsea to go would be to immediately try to buy their way to a Championship. They have all the money they need, they just need a few years of patience while they build and consolidate their squad - buying only players that will make a real positive impact and not sacking the coach if things don't immediately go their way. That's the only way I think for them to become the superpower they now have their sites on.

I wonder if their huge bid for Nesta was completely serious, or if it was more a demonstration of intent. "We're here, we've got money, and we want to play with the big boys."

I agree chelsea is a toy for him.

The danger for his personal economy with this adventure is the same than buying Championship Manager 4 for any of us.

The problem for Chelsea may come when he gets tired of this toy.

Similar to the team i despise the most, Inter. Moratti has spent more than 400million Euros on stars but they only won 3 UEFA cups, so pathetic.

Kluivert is now cheap to buy. Since July 1, his release clause is €1.8M, which represents a really hot-property in this year's transfer market. A great bargain.

Also, Joe Cole shouldn't cost much. With the Hammers relegated, he'd cost about 50% less (at least) than the original price.

And for now, these should be the only signings for the Blues. They are both market opportunities, and this Russian millionaire should be more worried in keeping the wage budget safe from the red-line, than trying to sign Ronaldinho or Rivaldo.
