United out for revenge

Manchester United FC return to the scene of their demise in last season's UEFA Champions League when they visit SL Benfica on Matchday 2. Sir Alex Ferguson's side failed to reach the knockout rounds for the first time since 1994/95 after going down to a 2-1 loss in Lisbon on 7 December last year but they have a swift opportunity for revenge at the Estádio da Luz.

• United are the early Group F leaders after beating Celtic FC 3-2 at Old Trafford on 13 September. Ole Gunnar Solskjær scored the winner two minutes into the second half – his first UEFA Champions League goal since 16 September 2003 against Panathinaikos FC. Louis Saha struck United's two other goals to open his account in the competition.

• Benfica made a satisfactory start with a goalless draw at FC København. Paulo Jorge went closest to breaking the deadlock with a shot against the post with 15 minutes remaining. A victory for United here would leave them strongly placed at the head of the section, while three points for Benfica could take them top depending on the result of the Celtic v København match.

• This is the sixth meeting between Benfica and United. The most famous was at Wembley Stadium in the final of the 1967/68 European Champion Clubs' Cup. United won 4-1 after extra time to become England's first European champions. Bobby Charlton (now a club director) opened the scoring and despite Jaime Graça's late equaliser, Matt Busby's team responded with three goals in seven minutes in extra time through George Best, Brian Kidd and Charlton again.

• United won the sides' first four encounters including a 2-1 success at Old Trafford on 27 September last year, when Ryan Giggs and Ruud van Nistelrooij were the scorers. Benfica finally got the better of the Red Devils at the fifth time of asking as Geovanni and Beto's goals overturned Paul Scholes' early effort to eliminate the English team from Europe.

• After overcoming United, the Eagles then beat Liverpool FC home (1-0) and away (2-0) in the first knockout round as they reached the quarter-finals for the first time since 1994/95 under former coach Ronald Koeman.

• Koeman's successor, Fernando Santos, has coached all of Portugal's 'Big Three' clubs. However, including his time at FC Porto and Sporting Clube de Portugal, his only meeting with an English club brought a 2-0 aggregate loss to Liverpool in the 2000/01 UEFA Cup.

• United have lost four of seven away games against Portuguese opposition. Their previous trip prior to last season's loss in Lisbon also brought a costly defeat, 2-1 against José Mourinho's Porto in the 2003/04 first knockout round.

both teams are looking to bounce back from 1 - 1 away draws with Rui Costa being a major doubt to start the game and a big blow for Benfica if his absence is confirmed.

Benfica has had a terrible start of the league suffering a 3 - 0 defeat against Boavista and taking only 4 points from 3 games. United had a great start with 4 wins in a row but has now been 2 games without winning.

don't have the same positive feeling about this one as I did last year, ever since Fernando Santos took over I've yet to see us play good football. We have a better roster but a worse team than last year... :(

I don't wanna make predictions, but it'll be really hard for us..

you had a positive feeling last year? I know I didn't last year, half depleted team, awful results, much worse lineup.

I'm not too confident either because United are playing much better than last year but I'll be there supporting the team nonetheless.

I'm pissed, i asked my boss a few days off, so i could go to Lisbon to see the game... He didn't gave them :kader: One day would be enough, bastard!

Anyway, i'm surprisingly confident, i just hope Ronaldo and Ronney aren't in one of those days :(

I'm predicting a 2-1 United victory, with goals from Scholes and Ronaldo. Estádio da Luz is such a beautiful stadium.

hopefully rui costa can play we need him... anyways i have no confidence at all especailly how we've been playing, just hope that we dont get blown out

do you guys reckon Ronaldo's getting booed again?..i mean the people who booed him last year had obviously no reason, and this year they still have no reason besides the fact that he responded(the finger), wich would be like a bunch of baby arguing..

anyway, i think United will win, but i think Benfica's going to do a good game, maybe a 2/3-1 vicotry to Man Utd..

i think they will continue to boo him especailly for the whole finger thing, but either way its stupid to boo him because there all kissing his ass come euro/world cup time

It's normal to boo the other team's best players, so yes, i believe he will most certainly be booed.
oh c'mon, everyone knows it has nothing to do with it or else they'd have to boo rooney and others...it's just a bit hypocrit don't you think? booing someone just for playing against you and then the exact same player does something that benefits you and you rejoice..only to boo him again as soon as he steps on the field against you again

Pleaase, we obviously boo him, not only because he's one of the best, but also because he's really imature and that can affect him... also because he's an individual player, if he's mentaly affected with something he will start with useless plays that will only affect the team.

Also, you probably insult Benfica/Sporting players everytime they play and your supporting them in the NT next time, so don't come with that bullsh*t saint theory

I don't have a positive result in my stomach. Our away form is like ... uh nevermind. A draw would be a good result but we may lose due to Turncoat's baffling line-up.

no, i always hate petit, but i usually say simao is a great player(besides being a crybaby - but that has nothing to do with benfica or NT), nuno gomes i'm ok with him too inside and outside benfica, i think quim is a great goalkeeper..want more?...if i say i don't like a player, i don't like him wether he's in Benfica, Porto, the NT or the World Stars playing to save the planet. for instance i hate Quaresma, i don't care if he's at sporting, barça, porto or the NT...so don't start with the "i probably this and you probably that"...

i'm not saying that you shouldn't boo another team's player, i'm just saying that if you do, make sure it isn't the same guy that 2 months before you called a "hero" and whatsoever..

you didn't get what i was trying to explain you, i don't want you to recognise their value, i'm just saying that you'd also boo them if you were in the stadium and they were in the other team, it's just a way to try to get their nerves on, so our team can get an advantadge out of it... and yeah, you will aplaude them one month lather if they score for the NT, you're making a big deal out of it,

it's just normal...

I'm not confident for this match at all. The team must be mentally strong for this type of matches and I can't see that with Fernando Santos in charge.

On a side note, of course Ronaldo will get booed. Especially after last time. Don't make such a big fuss out of it. Like RuiCosta_10 said what's the problem with that? He's playing against us so obviously we benfiquistas don't want him to do well in this match.

Hmm I'm pretty sure Ronaldo has proved it doesn't affect him, and if it does, it's in a positive way.
