He is going to be out for six months. With only 5 minutes to go in practice he tore his ACL. That will hurt our road to qualification for the U.S.

I am personally devastated, not only does it affect the national team but the club (Metro's) season.
It is also bad for the MLS in general.

Right on. Mathis has been really amazing, lending the kind of talent that the MLS needs to really establish itself into mainstream American sports. What the game needs is a real superstar, though -- someone who doesn't just have the talent of Mathis, Jones and Beasley, but has got a personality to build a cult and following around. :D

Well,

Let's look at it like this,

In the national side, Arena will probably go back to his line up before Mathis got hot. WHich ain't so bad. I think the US can wrap this qualifier up with out Mathis. As long as Mathis is back in form for WC 2002.

For the Metros, man its a major loss, but I don't feel sorry for them. Screw the Metro's!! ;)

I just hope Mathis lights it up again when he returns. THis is kind of like a double edged sword. I am hoping for Mathis to return to his top form for the US squad, but I know that it will also mean he will be lighting it up in the MLS. NAd I do hate the Metros...

You know, if you are a really good team. You can't just count on one man being out. You understand what I'm saying? If the US is truly improved they should continue to do well without him. That's the way I think of it.

if this guy is so good, how come we have never heard of him in europe.

You are not good until you have established yourself in England, Spain or Italy.

Just because a player doesn't play in europe, doesn't mean their not good. There are tons of players in America, Brazil and Africa who have so much talent, but aren't in europe. If he did play in europe, then everyone would see how great of a player Clint Mathis is.

the US has enough depth in all of its positions that they can effectively replace Mathis. Its still a blow to team USA, but they have more than enough talent here and there.

and unless you are playing in the top leagues you can not judge your ability. You have to be able to play well with the best in the world before you become that good.

I think he is that good. He has had a goal (or assist) in every club game, and the U.S. wouldn't be on top of the qualifying group without him.

Clint Mathis leads the MLS in goals and points. He recently scored one the nicest goals in mls history. It was a 75-yard run by himself. See it at www.mlsnet.com, click on multimedia archive and look for his goal (his goal is under 4/28/01). I bet he could start for any serie a or premier league team. All Europeans should be hearing about him soon, especially during the world cup.

When I first read this news, I was crushed.

I am both a USA and Metro supporter--he was my hero :)

But now that we're leading the table with 9 points we should still have enough firepower to get through relatively easily.

Reyna will have to go back on the attack more, which is, like fifafanatic said, what they did before Mathis got on the team.

Something like:

Keller/Friedel
Cherundolo--Agoos---Pope--Regis
Armas
Sanneh-------------Stewart
Reyna
McBride-------Moore, Razov, or Wolfe


Sadly, it just occurred to me that it was Mathis first showed up (the Mexico game) that we started on the winning streak.....

The game against Ecuador tonight, Jamaica on the 17th, and Trinidad on the 20th will show what level the depth of the USA is at.
