Compatibility Issues on WinXP

How can i run older games(Win95/98/2000 compatible) on winxp? well my CnC RedAlert2 game, i've tried running it in compatibility mode (the autorun.exe) for both win95 & 98 but the screen just shuts down, does anyone have any more tip for resolving this problem, Generals doesnt get released till feb11, thats a long time :(

Also should i install the winxp service pack 1?
