Controllers & PS2 Converters & USB 1.0 & 2.0 ?

I have the Play.com Adapter and after Realising that it had the Delay/Response Problems that have been widely Discussed on Various Forums, I decided to buy the Highly Recommended "Super Dual Box" Converter that Apparently has NO Delay Etc. ?

Well I got it Tonight and Plugged it in and after a Few Matches I wasnt Overly Impressed with the Response still and Didnt find it Too different from the play.com converter ???

So I whacked in my Old MS Sidewinder as Although it doesnt have Enough Buttons or even Sticks to play PES3 Properly it is the Benchmark when it comes to Response and NO Delays as it has no problems at all..................Well with the MS Sidewinder it was like playing a Different Game......my Players were far more Responsive when shutting down, getting the ball, dribbling and first time passing all felt slicker and completely different from the 2 Converters I had tried ?

But then I thought why did the "Super Dual Box" get such High praise on the Various Forums ? If this is how it is Performing ? Some People have even said it is just like playing it on PS2 with this Converter ! So why so Different from the MS Sidewinder ?

And then I had a Lightbulb above my Head Moment as I realised that I had my New Converter plugged into a USB 1.0 Slot (Nearer the Front of My PC)...................So with Nothing to Lose I thought I should plug it into the USB2.0 Slot (Back of My PC) and see if it was any Better with Responsiveness !

And * Wahla * it now seems far better after only 1 or 2 Matches ! (Need to Test More to be sure if its as Responsive as MS Sidewinder/ As I want)

So am I going Insane or would the USB 1.0 - USB 2.0 Slot - Make such a Difference ?

Would be interested to hear from Other "Super Dual Box" Owners as to how they find this Converters Response Etc. compared to PC Pads such as the "Logitech Dual Action"

Thanks
;)

All i can say is that be careful if you get a Logitech Dual Action gamepad.

It is a great gamepad, HOWEVER, alot of this product produced have a fault. For numerous people, the left analog stick becomes unresponsive.

So if you are going to buy this gamepad, MAKE SURE you buy it from somewhere you can return it, if there are any faults. The mistake i made is i bought one from overseas, and when i tried it and realised the left analog stick does not work correctly i could not return it. All logitech support said is return it to the place you bought it from! Doh!

Didn't have that one but have the play.com adapter and noticed two important things.

1) Delays occur when there is ONLY ONE PSX pad connected to the adaptor. If you don't have a controller connected to both ports then disable the second port in Device Manager and the delays disappear.

2) PES3 is EXTREMELY BAD at recognising diagonals from the analogue stick. I know that PES3 only has 8-directional player movement rather than 360degree, but in PES3 it seems ridiculously difficult to even dribble diagonally, resulting in 4-directional player movement. This was not just a problem with the PS2-USB adapter but with other USB gamepads I had which work fine with other progs. To solve this I deinstalled the PS2-USB adapter's drivers so that the standard WINXP driver was used instead, this driver (in Game Controllers) enables calibration of the analogue sticks. During calibration of the analogue stick, instead of circling the extremes of the X and Y axes I circled the analogue stick in smaller movements. This has 'tricked' PES3 into recognising diagonals at a much broader range.

The adaptor on my website (in the shop section) which supports 4 PS2 controllers has been awesome for me, no slowdowns and I don't need to use more than 1 USB slot to have more than a few people play the game. Seriously, I know two other people with this and it's been nothing but great.

this is my current problem  the controller used to work great when i just bought it ...I was very pleased unitl one game realised I couldnt move forward with the left anolog stick. I couldnt navigate menus are anything using the right diagonal on the left analog stick. I'll probably end up buying a differnt game controller just to play pes 3

The reason the controller seems more responsive when plugging it into USB 2.0 is that 2.0 is a lot faster than 1.0 (you already knew that of course). It'd be awesome if you could hook up the converter to Firewire (which is even faster than USB 2.0). I was going to buy one of them converters along with an SVideo cable so I could play PES3 PC with proper teams, kits etc on my TV (I also have PES3 PS2 version but you cant add proper kits as you know) but now I might rethink if I hear people experiencing slowdowns (in response) with the converter

Wolf what is the Actual Name of this 4 Pad Adapter ?

Is it for Sale in Europe ?

Any Links ?

Also have you compared it to a PC USB Gamepad that just plugs straight in ? (Like me with the MS Sidewinder)

Also Ballesteros, Maybe you should make your Info about the Play.com Adapter Delay Fix, well Known to the People on the Various PES3 Forums as a lot of People are Going out and Buying Alternatives and PC Pads when by the Sounds of it their is No Need with your Fix ?

I am one such Person ;)

Thanks

Thank you so much for that tip Ballesteros! I use the rockfire adapter and a dualshock pad and was getting mighty annoyed with the difficulty to move diagonally, but now it works great:)

Ballesteros & apone

Can you guys give some more Details of Exactly what you did in Calibration to get this Working Smoother with the Diagonals Etc.

Thanks

Right, this first part should apply to most people having diagonal problems whether with PC gamepads or PS2 converters.

Go to Control Panel -> Game Controllers
Click on the name of the pad and click on Properties
Go to 'Settings' tab then choose 'Calibrate...'

Follow the prompts except when it asks you to move the stick in complete circles, don't move it in complete circles, instead move it only halfway towards the extremes of each axis.

Try it in the game, you can always go back and try and tweak it a little bit if you're a perfectionist. NB that if you use the same analogue stick in other games then you might now find it over sensitive.

For those who do not have a 'Calibrate' option for their analogue axes (eg those who installed the play.com drivers from the CD), you can revert to the standard WinXP game controller drivers by uninstalling the current driver.

I did this by running the following command (from Start -> Run... or at the Command Prompt):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultUninstall 132 J:\setup\usbpadzz.inf

Where my OS is Windows XP,
J: was my CD drive
J:\setup\usbpadzz.inf was the path of the play.com driver installer info

The command is slightly different for Win9X/WinMe, see here for details
http://www.dx21.com/SCRIPTING/RUNDLL32/INF.ASP

With the specific drivers now removed, the XP generic drivers ought to load automatically, if this does not happen then disconnect then reconnect the USB cable to force it to refresh. You should now have axis calibration menus like everybody else, but NB that the shock/rumble features might no longer be supported in other games (I'm not sure as I don't play any games that use them).

While I'm at it I might as well cover the part about having only one controller connected to the play.com 2-port adaptor. If you only have one PSX controller connected and you are experiencing delays, try disabling the empty port ('Disable' not 'Uninstall').
To do this go to Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> Human Interface Devices

You should see a number of 'HID-compliant game controller' devices, corresponding to the number of gamepads (or USB converted ports) connected to your system. Right-click on the one that corresponds to the empty PS2 port and choose 'Disable' (do not choose 'Uninstall' as Windows would detect it again later and reinstall it).

If you don't know which one to disable then either use trial and error and test under Game Controller -> Properties -> Test
or use Device Manager -> View -> Devices by connection
and navigate the tree to find the group of 'HID-compliant game controller' entries that corresponds to your PS2 converter.

If you still get delays try a different USB port and/or try removing any unused USB pads.

Think that just about covers it,
Seb T.

i had that left analog problem with my logitech dual action. basicly if i let go of the stick my players would run right, was the same in fifa04 or any game. and it would carry into the calibration, i used this programe(ClrCalib.exe) a few times and have had no problems since.

http://www.wingmanteam.com/latest_software/gadgets.htm#Clear Calibration Utility:

it basicly deletes all registry entries used for joystick calibration. then you just recalibrate, and all is well.

Hey ,

I have received the 'Super Dual Box' by mail today , and it works fine , didn't even have to calibrate or put a second controller in the empty port.

But there's one thing, everytime i start the game i have to go to options to select the gamepad instead of keyboard.

And the, if i want to assign the keyboard to the 2nd player , that's not possible ......

Anyone recognizes this ?

Matthiasvdb

OK , I already solved the first problem, you have to assign the controller to the first player via the settings.exe , not in-game.

Then there's only this thing, that the keyboard has to be assigned to the 1st player. You can't assign it to other players.

Fantastic!!!

This works for me and my Thrustmaster Dualshock controller for PES4demo. I was starting to get me down that I just could not get diagonals to work very well but this tip has sorted it out beautifully.

Thanks Ballesteros, even though the post is nearly 1 year old.

I also have that left analog stick problem, but have lost my receipt so I can't return it. Will try the program on that page after I get home from work. Thanks ;)

It's good that you guys brought this thread alive again cause i was thinking about buying Super Dual Box too and now i know what to try if i'll notice same problems :) . I also have MS Sidewinder and it doesn't have enough buttons to PES4.
