Controversial goal in Iceland

O-car

Starting XI
Last week ÍA and Keflavík met in a match here in Iceland. This match wouldn't be worth mentioning if not for the very controversial goal scored in the match. An ÍA player was down and needed medical treatment, so Keflavík did the honorable thing and sent the ball of the field so the treatment could be given to the player.

Now, ÍA had the throw in, and a player in the team shot the ball toward the goal, but the shot was too good and the ball ended up in the net with a goal that proved to be the match winner.

by this time all hell broke out, with players chasing each other into the dressing room, accusations at both ends and what not

The honorable thing to do for the ÍA team would have been to allow Keflavík to go forward and get a goal in return, but they refused

here is the goal

(the first one)

A similar thing happened also in an Ajax match, with a much more honest reaction from Ajax

hahaha (H)

kind of the same happened at a game in I think Holland some time ago...they could have let the other team score one goal back like it was done in the other game I mentioned.
still, funny as **** (H)

team in red should be suspended. it was a clear accident. the reaction was shocking and unwarranted. the other team probably would have let them score if they didn't confront the goal scorer.

great goal mind you.

Amen to that. Sadly common sense and football(ers) rarely seem to go hand in hand.

That's nothing compared to that guy in USL who used a player with a broken arm to play himself onside.

Haha what a goal (H)
I like the reaction of the players who score those accidental goals acting as if they're really sorry..

there is actually a bit of a funny coincidence about this event. A few years back a similar thing happened in a KR match, and back then the manager, Gudjon Thordarson, refused to give back a goal. The manager for KR at the time is the current ÍA manager, and is also the father of the guy who got this goal. The ÍA manager also used to manage Keflavík for a short while before suddenly quitting to take a managerial position for Notts County. So you could say that Keflavík has a bit of a grudge towards Gudjon

Why SHOULD they give them a goal back? It's a goal in open play. It may be the "gentlemanly" thing to do, but as far as i know there's no rule stating they have to.

There was same thing in Eredivisie with Ajax player(Sneijder?) scoring the goal when he just intended to kick the ball back to other team. Then they just let them score the goal back. Most people here have probably seen the video.

edit: nevermind, MaSsiVe already mentioned it.

it's no rule, but the unwritten rule is that when the other team puts the ball of the pitch so your teammate can be treated, you give the ball back to them, you don't go and score a goal straight away. It was an unfortunate thing the goal, but the honorable thing to do would have been to give a goal back

yeah i know what you mean (experienced the influence of "unwritten laws" in action in Sunday league games). But meh, i'd take the goal :p A goal's a goal in my books.

The opposition can feel hard done by, but they cant exactly turn round and say "they should've let us score back!" because there's nothing saying they must do.

I remember that incident (back in 1999 I think) in an FA Cup tie between Arsenal and Sheffield United, when one of the Sheffield United players kicked the ball out for an Arsenal player to receive treatment. Then when Arsenal kicked the ball into the other half, Kanu ran on to it and set up a goal, causing the Sheffield United players and staff to get angry. Arsenal won but after the rows escalated they agreed to replay the match.

Though there was one I think last season or the season before, Yeovil played Plymouth in a League Cup match, Plymouth kicked the ball out, so when one of the Yeovil players kicked the ball upfield the Plymouth keeper missed it and it went in the goal. So from the kickoff the Yeovil players did what Ajax did, they let Plymouth's strikers run through unopposed and scored!! (H)
