Defending In Cm0304

Hi

I recently switched up from CM4 to 0304.

I never used to have problems organizing my team defensively.

However, i've started a game with Sampdoria and did decently in my first season as i finished 3rd, but i took in 52 goals in the league.

Buying De La cuesta amongst other good defenders didn't help. This season, after 8 matches, i'm on ly 6th and i keep taking in dumb goals which would avoid me draws and get me more wins. I've tried all sequences, and for some time so that they would adapt. Zilch. Zonal. Man. Ultra defensive. Defensive. Normal. 4 defenders, 3 mids. 2 sweepers, 2 laterals.
4 defenders, 1 def mid, 2 wingers. You name it.

I'm sure you guys have good tips on building a solid defense, cause i'm out of ideas.

Thanks!

The way I defend: two attacking full backs with settings normal and tackling normal. two centre backs with good heading, marking and tackling(like Jose) and set them on ultra defensive and tackling hard. Then a DMC with settings defensive but with free role selected to cover up the possible holes.

Hope that helps a bit

here are the main defenders i use :

Falcone (only decent. but useful)
Domizzi (class)
Ferri (looks pretty good but has been doing average for me thus far)
De la cuesta (yes)
Potenza (youngster loaned from inter)
Konjic (some ooooold player, but with pretty good defensive stats and is just sub. only really got him cause he's cheap)

zlatan, don't you get passed quite easily on the flanks with your attacking full backs ?

would you guys go with this ?

ferri domizzi de la cuesta falcone

all of these players can play on the wings as well. so it's hard to choose where to set them. a lot of you guys have experience with such players, i'm sure, so how would you go about it ? thanks.

When I was Sampdoria, defending was a problem as well.
However it got a bit better when I had all my defenders and DM with a mentality of Ultra-Defensive

When the PC is playing a 4-3-3 you better change your tactic. Against opposition with 2 strikers i use a flat 4, CB's on ultra defensive and man marking, both full-backs on defensive and the def. mid on defensive or normal. I still manage to score a lot, using a 4-1-3-2 with those settings. Just set the team to play down both wings and you should be ok.

Against opposition playing more than 2 strikers i use a flat 4 plus 2 DMC's.

i just beat lyon 3-0 in my CL group, which puts me ahead quite nicely after beating dortmund 6-2 and vienna 6-1. the only thing i changed is Palombo's (my MD) instructions to play more of a free role.

the thing is, i've understood what's wrong with my defence.

whether i set it to man or zonal marking, my laterals will only mark the strikers and not the wingers, whereas i usually have my strikes marked by the center backs... which means the wingers are completely left to run around as they wish. in addition to this, this means my center backs are really not marking anyone and are just standing around and enjoying the soft grass.

it's really frustrating when the opponents launch an attack and domizzi on the left completely ignores the wingerbehind him and runs towards the striker whereas the center backs are picknicking. any idea how to change this ?

Man marking never works for me, I have my whole defense line o ultra defensive and zonal marking. The DM has man mark if the opponent has a really class striker (i.e. against Milan-Schevchenko or Juve-Del Piero)

Zonal marking is so plain ****e to me, i mean, when i get hit on the counter the chances of conceding with zonal marking are 100%, i mean, there's 2 attackers against 2 of my defenders and usually both of them run into the guy that has the ball and he passes it, leaving his team-mate with a clean shot on goal.

Due to zonal marking. Lost a few league titles with Liverpool before i changed to man marking, now i dont concede more than 30-35 goals a season (that with Millwall, HSV etc, not only top notch clubs). Have a couple of decent defenders with a fair pace and a good DMC and you're set.

When I put the defenders on man marking they are marking their opponent on a distance of 20 mettres. I played 18 seasons zonal with PSV, not conceding more than 15 goals a season.
