biggest i beleive is either Celtic vs Rangers as it is the only derby that brings a whole country into the derby Celtic(Scotland & Republic of Ireland)Rangers(Scotland & Nothern Ireland) and another derby that is crazy is Boca against River
I love Celtic/Rangers.
But its interesting how seperated some communities in Europe are and how different they view football.
Like in the UK they have their own community and shared history (clubs like Man U, Liverpool, Celtic, RAngers are worshiped throughout). <seeing as the S. american players have only recently started playing in their leagues + very limited media exposure, they wouldnt know any more clubs in S. America except Boca/River and maybe the odd Brazilian here and there. <<<And I even spoke to many scots who had never heard of Boca too when I was in germany
)
While casual and hardcore fans from ITaly/Spain can easily tell you many S. American teams (IE: I dont know 1 Spanish person who doesnt know: Independiente or Penarol- 2 world wide elites in football history.)
While in S. America, (with my recent interest in the Scottish league), when I started to talk to them about "Celtic and Rangers" having awesome crowds they looked at me as if I was talking about 4th division football from the Pillippines
<sp?>. (no one's ever heard of what I consider 2 of the coolest clubs on earth)
<<<the ONLY reason they know of Celtic is as : "That green team that Racing beat to become world champions in 67" :/
But it's pretty cool as it's 1 thing that makes the World Cup special for me.
(bringing of so many different football culture)
Oh and -dubcrazy- the other derby that unites the whole nation is Uruguay's Nacional vs. Penarol.
http://www.fifa.com/en/WorldLeagues/index/0,4643,126322,00.html?articleid=126322
(one of the elite derbies of S. America and IMO pretty much BESIDES the pride of having 2 world cups, 2 olympics and 14 copa americas ......they even more important in Uruguay's history and IMO are even more important in the inclusion of Uruguay in S.America's "holy trinity" (Argentina/Brazil/Uruguay) with only 2.5-3 million people, both together having: 8 Copa Libertadores and 6 World/Intercontinental Championships.
That's pretty much the reason why I freaken love Celtic/Rangers (both nations are so alike in football tradition, league, derby and even recently both of them getting pretty lacking in continental competition <though for Nac/Pen it was domination from 1960 till 1988 while Celtic just had 67....but whatever> etc.
It's too bad they dont face eachother anymore (Celtic invited Penarol to face them numerous times during the 60s including a celebration game vs. the Lisbon Lions (celtic 67) in preperation to their big Racing World Title match 1 month later).
Anyways yeah : If Im not mistaken those are the only 2 derbies in the world that stop the entire nation (Boca/River has many neutrals watch but its not 1/2 and 1/2 of the nation that are majority of fans)
