I’ve noticed a few derbies this weekend so I thought I’d start a thread on it. What do you guys think the best derby is and what has been the best derby match you have seen.

Yesterday was the big derby in South Africa, Kaizer Chiefs vs Orlando Pirates, and I have to say it was a very good one, Pirates scored in the 20th minute and it looked like it was going to stay that way to the end, until four minutes into extra time, the last moments in the game chiefs got a corner, everybody came up including the goalkeeper, low and behold Shaun Bartlett was the man to break the deadlock for chiefs to the supporters delight. It truly was a remarkable game.

biggest i beleive is either Celtic vs Rangers as it is the only derby that brings a whole country into the derby Celtic(Scotland & Republic of Ireland)Rangers(Scotland & Nothern Ireland) and another derby that is crazy is Boca against River

I went to the Cote d'Azur derby at Monaco last season, it was an awesome game. Monaco were 3-0 up at half time, but OGC Nice won 4-3 (H)

pretty much states the top ones. (ie: most famous.........cause there are other awesome derbies IE: Hearts/Hibs or Independiente-Racing etc) <its actually the same article as one that came online a few years ago and then Sports Illustrated did one where it pretty much had the same ones .......same with a book on football I picked up in Germany in summer <all but 2-3 were there .....<thankfully Nacional/Penarol was in all of them :D >

From site: not in order:

1) Argentina - Boca- River
2) Brazil- Flamengo - Vasco
3) Bulgaria CSKA Sofia vs Levski Sofia  really????
4) Manchester United vs Liverpool
5) Greece Olympiacos vs Panathinaikos
6) Italy Internazionale vs Juventus
7) Mexico- Guadalajara vs América
8 )Netherlands -Ajax vs Feyenoord
9) Portugal Benfica vs FC Porto
10) Scotland -Rangers vs Celtic
11) Spain- FC Barcelona vs Real Madrid
12) Uruguay -Peñarol vs Nacional

(it has descriptions as to WHY on the site)

I love Celtic/Rangers.

But its interesting how seperated some communities in Europe are and how different they view football.

Like in the UK they have their own community and shared history (clubs like Man U, Liverpool, Celtic, RAngers are worshiped throughout). <seeing as the S. american players have only recently started playing in their leagues + very limited media exposure, they wouldnt know any more clubs in S. America except Boca/River and maybe the odd Brazilian here and there. <<<And I even spoke to many scots who had never heard of Boca too when I was in germany  )

While casual and hardcore fans from ITaly/Spain can easily tell you many S. American teams (IE: I dont know 1 Spanish person who doesnt know: Independiente or Penarol- 2 world wide elites in football history.)

While in S. America, (with my recent interest in the Scottish league), when I started to talk to them about "Celtic and Rangers" having awesome crowds they looked at me as if I was talking about 4th division football from the Pillippines :S <sp?>. (no one's ever heard of what I consider 2 of the coolest clubs on earth)

<<<the ONLY reason they know of Celtic is as : "That green team that Racing beat to become world champions in 67" :/

But it's pretty cool as it's 1 thing that makes the World Cup special for me.
(bringing of so many different football culture)

Oh and -dubcrazy- the other derby that unites the whole nation is Uruguay's Nacional vs. Penarol.

http://www.fifa.com/en/WorldLeagues/index/0,4643,126322,00.html?articleid=126322

(one of the elite derbies of S. America and IMO pretty much BESIDES the pride of having 2 world cups, 2 olympics and 14 copa americas ......they even more important in Uruguay's history and IMO are even more important in the inclusion of Uruguay in S.America's "holy trinity" (Argentina/Brazil/Uruguay) with only 2.5-3 million people, both together having: 8 Copa Libertadores and 6 World/Intercontinental Championships.

That's pretty much the reason why I freaken love Celtic/Rangers (both nations are so alike in football tradition, league, derby and even recently both of them getting pretty lacking in continental competition <though for Nac/Pen it was domination from 1960 till 1988 while Celtic just had 67....but whatever> etc.

It's too bad they dont face eachother anymore (Celtic invited Penarol to face them numerous times during the 60s including a celebration game vs. the Lisbon Lions (celtic 67) in preperation to their big Racing World Title match 1 month later).

Anyways yeah : If Im not mistaken those are the only 2 derbies in the world that stop the entire nation (Boca/River has many neutrals watch but its not 1/2 and 1/2 of the nation that are majority of fans)

Um ...no not really. It's actually pretty safe derby. (sure there might be a scrap between drunken fans after the game but it hasnt been noteworthy in years).

It's actually my dream to go to one of these things 1 day. It's really an awesome sight to see these 2 teams play :)

I might sound like an ediot here, but why does it say in the wikipedia article that the main portuguese derby is benfica vs Porto, I know they're probably the two best sides in portugal but derbies are usually involve teams that are close in location, so for that reason shouldn't Benvica vs Sporting be the big derby in portugal

I do not like the Norwegian derby.. Vålerenga - FC Lyn Oslo.
Lyn have so few supporters so we always win on tribune, and its just almost 20.000 on that matches. We have a another :drevil: derby :drevil: Vålerenga - Lillestrøm. Thats bigger tho ;)

My favourite its Liverpool - Manchester United and Atlètico Madrid - Real Madrid.

The biggest I think its Rangers - Celtic. I always hope Rangers win. :)

Spartak vs CSKA is the biggest derby in Russia. It gathers more than 70 000 fans. The fights between the fans usually start in the first half of the day near railway stations.

Ullevaal takes just 25.000 ;)

But it will change when we get our own stadium I think.
And Norway / Sweden are gonna ask for Euro 2016 :wootman: Then we get some more stadiums.
