Device Manager..........empty

The title says it all. About a week ago my friend connected his crashed hard-drive to my comp in an attempt to save some data. Well the drive didnt show up anywhere & when I went to the device manager it was empty........completely empty. There was nothing in it :|:|:| Well we disconnected the drive & threw it out into the thrash. I didnt really bother checking the device manager again that day. Yesterday I popped the device manager open & its still empty. Can anyone tell me whats going on? Will I need a re-install to get it working again?

You got a trojan m8. I got this problem before. I even thought of reformatting. But I installed NOD32(antivurs sofware) and it detected the trojan. CLean everything and my device manager is ok again.

Really?? How come my norton never detected it  Yeah.......i guess that explains why my Norton worm signatures dont update either :( So how do I get rid of this pesky thing? Is this NOD32 free? I doubt it right.........

no it's not Free but i suggest you buy it. It's much faster and efficient than Norton. It is very light and doesn't take a day to open unlike norton...

Tried NOD32. It detected a few trojans & deleted them. But my device manager is still empty :( Perhaps I should use safe-mode & run it?

Tried this? Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK to see if the plug and play "status" is listed as "started" and that the "startup type" is set to "automatic".

Another thing you could try >

You must be logged on as a local administrator to perform this task:

1. Go to "Start", "Run", and enter "regedit"
2. Maximize the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" window.
3. Scroll down to "SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum"
4. With "Enum" selected click the "Security", "Permissions" menu.

Note: At this point you will probably notice there are no permissions on this key.

5. Click "Add".
6. Add the group "Everyone" and the user "SYSTEM".
7. Select "Everyone" and check "Read" ONLY!
8. Select "SYSTEM" and check "Full Control".
9. Click the "Advanced" button at the bottom of the window.
10. On the Advanced window check "Reset permissions on all child objects..."
11. Click "OK"
12. On the warning window click "Yes"
13. Close REGEDT32

Hope ya get it sorted soon :ewan:

Get this, http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/aproposfix.exe
Should do the trick.

Forgot the instruction...

instrucctions:

Save it to your desktop or to another folder of its own, but do NOT run it yet!

Now reboot your computer in Safe Mode! (You must be in safe mode or this fix will not work.)

Once in Safe Mode, double-click aproposfix.exe which will give you a chice of where to unzip/install the program to). This is called the Destination folder in the window that popsup. So either install it to the Desktop or the folder where you downloaded the aproposfix.exe file to. It will create a new folder named aproposfix. Open the aproposfix folder and double click on RunThis.bat to run the fix. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file that has been created in the aproposfix folder.

Umm I dont really get what you mean by select "enum" mate :(.The Security Permissions thingy already has "SYSTEM" & another entry called "administrators". Also there is no option to reset permissions in the advanced tab......

EDIT:Will try your tip next Y2K :)

NOD won awards on virus detection. It's my best friend, it detects the virus before it evens gets on my PC.
