It's only down to the drastic changes it's had. In PES4, you could launch away from people and completely bypass any hint of a midfield battle. PES5 is all about the midfield battle, on the other hand.
The empty stadiums was intentional. The lack of ML weather is a bug.
I quite like the way it's went, though. They've clearly watched a lot of football for this game. They emphasise the importance of a good performance in the middle of the park. Handling the ball isn't slow, either. You've simply got to get ready to receive it. Like any player would. In PES4, it was very much an automatic process.
A lot of the new game relies on your approach to the game, too. If you had a good team on PES4, it would pretty much garantee you a victory. PES5 now has sides that can organise and frustrate you. They'll change their tactics against you to cancel you out. They'll even fling on an extra forward, if it thinks it has a chance against you.
It's nice to see competitive AI. PES4 was too inviting. It let you attack the opposition. It allowed you the luxury of getting the final third. This year, Konami want you to work for it. You find yourself relying on star players. It's nice to see that the AI will organise itself around your side. It doesn't really care if your team has Zidane, Ronaldinho, et al. Paper teams win paper cups. This is a much more level playing field.
