Edu for England?

Edu to represent England?
Arsenal, Sunday April 04 2004
Edu is considering throwing in his lot with England after failing to make an impression at national level with Brazil.

The Arsenal star admitted he may take advantage of regulations which would make him eligible for England.

To represent a country other than that of one?s birth, a player needs to be resident for two or more years.

"I hope it's natural I will be called for Brazil team. But I also know it's possible for me to play for England - and I am thinking about that," he said.

"Of course, there are many good midfield players in England too, so it would be hard to get into the England team as well."

The 25-year-old Edu, who has taken some time to settle Arsenal, has been in fine form for the Gunners this season, winning rave reviews on the left side of their midfield.

"People keep saying there are no left-footers for the England midfield and that it's a problem," said Edu.

"It is something to think about for me. If Brazil don't pick me for international football, then why not?

"Some people have already asked me about it, but I figure that I have to be patient.

"I'm 25 years old and I hope I have a long time ahead in the game. Playing for Brazil is a big thing and so is playing for England.

"We'll see what happens."

While Edu was out of favour at arsenal, i was always a fan of his. I prefer him to Gilberto, and he would be good in the england team.

Having a foreign coach is enough, ta.

Don't get me wrong because he is a top class player and I can't blame him for being interested in playing for another country.

Has Edu actually played for brasil? I thought you could only swap countries if you played at a smaller level of international football (U21, U18.)

Fernandez

Team Captain
Although I would love to see him in an England shirt, the Lions are quite stocked in midfielders right now. This is also familiar to the Malbranque situation.

But if Edu can play left wing..........nah but if he has played in brasil A team it shouldnt be allowed, otherwise everyone will do it. Could u imagine Henry for england....:p

I don't remember Edu ever playing for Brazil's main national team... he did play for the U-?? squads though, but that means nothing as he can play for the U-?? and represent another country at top level...
On a side note, Silvinho, another brazilian to play in England was called up only once, and did play against England in a friendly (you have no idea how much I like those call ups... "he knows the english game well" was what our manager was saying)

No way. Parreira should call him right away, he's better than Kleberson, and he's one of the reasons Gilberto is warming the bench at Arsenal.

Why would Henry play for England? Thats unimaginable :p

Anywayz Edu could get a Brazilian NT...

Though if he doesn't then England could definately use him and they could maybe even try putting him on the LW...

When I thought you were only slightly clueless to football, you threw that comment out, and showed you're COMPLETELY clueless.

Edu can play for England since he has no A squad international caps under his belt. If he had already played for Brazil at the A squad level he'd be out of question for it, he would be able to get dual-citizenship, but that wouldn't do much if he had already played. Look at half of France's team for instance...

Ronaldo faces a battle to be fit for Brazil's World Cup qualifier away to Paraguay next week.

If he fails to recover in time, there are two candidates to take his place - Adriano of Inter Milan and Luis Fabiano of Sao Paulo.

Luis Fabiano is being tipped by many for a call-up

There is no doubt as to which one the Brazilian public would prefer. Luis Fabiano is the overwhelming choice.

Adriano can score as many goals in Italy as he likes, but public opinion in Brazil will always give preference to the local man.

This mentality is not well understood across the Atlantic. In Europe it is usually assumed that all the best Brazilian players have already made their way to clubs in Spain, Italy, Germany, England and France.

On this basis, those who are left behind are clearly not ready or not good enough for football in the First World.

That is emphatically not how things are seen in Brazil.

There is a select group who play abroad - the likes of Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos - who have proved themselves time and time again. They are recognised as the best in the world.

Pride is also taken in Kaka's sensational first season in Italy, but even more pride is taken in Luis Fabiano's exploits with Sao Paulo.

Or, in Rio de Janeiro, the midfield creativity of Flamengo's Felipe.

Getting into the squad is one thing, staying there is another thing altogether

On the rigours of the Brazil national set-up

If a coach of the Brazilian national team wants to play to the gallery, all he needs to do is call up plenty of players from the local clubs.

The public see these players every week. The press interview them every day. Ties of loyalty and affection are built up. It is not possible to construct such a relationship with players who are thousands of miles away.

This, after all, is a football culture which would prefer to see itself as five-time world champions, rather than as just a feeder for the major European clubs.

For those seeking an international career, it is advisable to make the move to Europe only after securing a place in the Brazil squad.

Otherwise it can be very difficult to break in from the outside - as Arsenal's Edu is discovering.

Once a player heads for Europe he can find himself off the radar screen of Brazilian football. This weekend it was brought to my attention that a leading Rio TV pundit does not even know who Edu is.

Edu has been gaining increasing publicity in Brazil

Nevertheless, Arsenal's Champions League campaign, and particularly the goal he scored against Celta Vigo, have done wonders for Edu's international ambitions.

He is now receiving coverage in the Brazilian press, and some writers have argued that he could take Ze Roberto's slot on the left side of Brazil's midfield.

National team coach Carlos Alberto Parreira is following his progress.

It could be, then, that Edu's chance will come before long - perhaps in this July's Copa America.

But getting into the squad is one thing. Staying there is another thing altogether.

If his chance does come, it will have to be seized quickly. There will always be a new local boy making a challenge for the position.

That's not true... Have you seen Luis Fabiano playing? he may have a violent behaviour some times, but he dribbles very well, he can kick with both left and right legs, is a good header... And Adriano had already his chance in the starting 11, and he didn't play very well, Luis Fabiano has played 1 friendly, scored 1 goal, and nothing more...
