end of season playoffs/finals to decide league champions

What do people think of the idea of league champions being decided by a playoff system or final series, as opposed to the current system where the points leader automaticly wins.

I raise this becuase of the talk of expanding the serie A, and adding a playoff to decide the scudetto, and the fact that in almost every other sport, champions are decided by a final.

I don't like the idea of champions being decided by a single final game (like in the superbowl), but I wouldn't mind seing the top 4 teams from the domestic league playing off in either a "best of" format or a 2-leg format, to make sure the better team doens't loose simply because they had a bad game.

finals suck...........

the one who plays the best over that season should be champion of that season. but then..... perth glory would actually have a chance :|

The season wouldn't mean that much anymore, and playoffs would extend the season unecesarily. Players play too many games anyway...

Play-offs are there for purely financial reasons, which is why the American sports have them.

We don't need it in football. The league is good enough and already there are knock-out cups available, alongside the prestigious Champions League.

Some of the leagues in the Americas have them. I know for sure Argentina doesnt, but Mexico does and its actually quite entertaining.

It does extend the season but it also makes it more exiting, cuz i just think its sometimes boring when a team wins the title with 2 or 3 weeks to go, it just makes those final weeks pointless since the champion is already decided, and i know some of you are gonna say they're not useless cuz teams are still looking to qualify for European tournaments, but i mean pointless when it comes to deciding the champion.

Though some would argue that it would take away the title of the highest ranked team, it also adds more exitement. The way they do it in Mexico is home/away games where the aggregate score decides the winner, and if its tied the highest ranked team goes on.

I find the idea completely rubbish. No offence to any leagues that has this system, but the so-called excitement will be dwarved by the fact that not a top team wins the league.

When there's a play-off system, it is usually the team that just sneaks in who wins it, because they will have the current form to back them up.

Also, it makes the regular season more or less pointless.

There is allready a playoff system for the domestic cups. So you have a cup/playoff winner, and a regular season winner. I think its fine like this. If the domestic league champion is decided by a playoff system, the current domestic cups will mean less than they allready do.

Finals series are exciting and I love them, however a 'first past the post' system is by far fairer.

However what they are doing in the NSL over here is quite different (well last I heard it was still happening this way). The top 6 at the end of the season play a further home/away round robin series with the top teams starting it with 'x' amount of points head start depending on their place. The winner is the one on top after the top 6 series.

that would cuck 100%.
The Cup alreayd exists... the League is all about consistency...as the well known saying says "it's a marathon not a srpint"

if you want exciting final then look towards the Cup, that's why it's there

What I expected.

I don't like the idea of a team winning the title when they aren't really the best team (which happens in one game finals), and I wouldn't be in favour of drawing out the season with a long prolonged playoff system (like the NBA or NHL, where the playoffs can last 28 games per team!)

But what about a final purely between 1st and 2nd, and not over a single game. Say a best of 3,5 or 7, with the 1st place playing all games at home, so the better team really does come out on top. Thats the way they do it in US sports, although i'm not suggesting to do what they do and haave a 2-3 month playoff with half the league, as it devalues the regular season.

you are wrong. To be among the final 2 or 3, you are automatically one of the best. From then on - you ride your luck, play to your fullest and leave the rest to fate. Thats what its all about.

For the English game, Playoffs is a pretty bad idea. Leagues and Playoffs play out very differently and a good league team isn't necessarily a good playoff team. Plus other people have already said there's already the FA/League cup already that's in a play-off format, so IMO the premier league should stick with the league point format.
