Barça mourn stalwart Gràcia
Thursday, 26 May 2005
FC Barcelona are mourning former player Sigfrid Gràcia, who died on Monday aged 73.

Local lad
Gràcia was born in the Catalan town of Gavà on 27 March 1932 where he started out as a promising left-back with local side CEF Gavà. He later joined España Industrial, as the Barcelona youth team were then known, before graduating to the Barça senior squad where he would remain for 14 seasons.

Trophy haul
With the Blaugrana he claimed three league titles, four Spanish Cups and three Inter-Cities Fairs Cups. Barcelona won the inaugural edition of that last competition in 1958 against a London XI, and Gràcia was also involved in the final victories against Birmingham City FC (1960) and Real Zaragoza (1966).

International
In addition he was capped ten times by his country between 1959 and 1962, making his debut in a 4-2 win against Poland in Katowice on 28 June 1959.

European disappointment
Sadly, Gràcia was unable to add the European Champion Clubs' Cup to his collection. He was part of the Barça side that lost the 1961 final 3-2 to SL Benfica in Berne. In total, he made 525 appearances for the Blaugrana, scoring 21 goals.

Who wants the honours for starting the 05/06 Thread?

already?

and about Ezquerro, he's comming to play in case he's needed but not to be a starter.

He's an ok player but that's all. He has done a good season but he wasn't even an always starter other seasons at Ath.Bilbao.

The only good point is taht he's comming for free. Every team needs players who accept to be in the bench for many games. If those players come for free, that's better.

If no one makes it, I will, but we could wait until sunday, at least.

Tomorrow Barça play the last game of the season.

List for Anoeta:
Goalkeepers: Valdés y Jorquera
Defenders: Damià, Gabri, Puyol, Oleguer, Fernando Navarro, Sylvinho
Midfielders: Márquez, Edmílson, Motta, Iniesta, Gerard
Forwards: Giuly, Eto'o, Larsson

Ronaldinho is suspended, he received the 5th yellow card against Villarreal. Deco and Albertini are injured (and Maxi, but we did know that already). Belletti, Gio and Xavi because they deserve the rest, I guess (Gio doesn't :)).

Barcelona president to hand Eto'o, Ronaldinho £6M-a-year deals

Barcelona president Joan Laporta is ready to smash his wage structure to hold onto star pair Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto'o.

Both players still have three years left on their present deals, but Laporta is fearful of the pull of Chelsea and wants to tie the pair down to longer agreements - worth a staggering £6 million-a-year.

Eto'o currently pockets £2.4 million-a-year, while Ronaldinho is earning £3.2 million-a-year.

Laporta's scheme flies in the face of Johan Cruyff's recommendation that Barca not commit to long term deals and keep their wages in check.

The Barca president also risks player morale, with the likes of Deco and Carles Puyol sure to be upset over the 'super contracts' being offered to their teammates.

you go Laporta! :)
imho, its too big of a pay-raise, and for just 2 players, its like saying they are the only ones deserving of this raise (well, they have like 90% of the credit for Barca's good season), but the other players wont be too satisfied, like the article said. How much does Puyol make?

Barcelona's visit to Real Sociedad represents Samuel Eto'o's last chance of becoming Europe's top goalscorer as he bids to overhaul Thierry Henry at the top of the Golden Boot table and extend his lead in the Spanish scoring charts.

The encounter in the Anoeta this Saturday (19:00, Barca TV) sees the Blaugrana round off what has been a superb season for Frank Rijkaard's side. As well as winning the club's first title for six seasons, there are still two individual awards to be won. Victor Valdes has already wrapped up the Zamora Trophy as the league's top goalkeeper and Eto'o is set to become the top goalscorer.

The opposition: Real Sociedad veterans Valery Karpin and Bittor Alkiza are set to play their final games for the San Sebastian-based club after announcing that they are to retire from professional football at the end of the current season. Coach Jose MAria Amorrortu has virtually his entire squad to choose from, although on-loan midfielder, Dragan Mladenovic, is likely to end his short stay in Spanish football by starting on the bench. Oscar De Paula will start up front again, as Darko Kovaecivic is still absent.

Previous meetings: The last time Rijkaard's side met Real Sociedad in the Anoeta the game ended in a dramatic 3-3 draw. Motta put Barcelona in front, before goals from Igor Jauregui and Javier De Pedro saw the home side take the advantage. Marc Overmars  drew the Blaugrana level, but Valery Karpin netted Sociedad's third goal. Gabri though was in the right place to earn Barca a share of the spoils to cap a thrilling encounter. Samuel Eto'o scored the only goal of the game this season when the two sides met on January 16 this year. The free-scoring striker netted the winner in the dying moments of the game to clinch all three points.

About having the honor of starting the next season thread, I think it should be SuRFy.

He has been the P.O.S (poster of the season) in this thread.

:clapwap:

but wait until monday as DT says. At least, let the Liga finish.

There are teams still fighting for CL, UEFA or to avoid relegation spots. Let's respect that. (something that obviously hasn't been done in the Madrid thread.)
