Eto'o takes African award
The fantastic form of Samuel Eto'o with Barca this season has earned him the African Player of the Year award for the second year running.
The Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) has chosen Barca's Cameroonian striker as best African player of the year for the second year running. Samuel Eto'o received a total of 116 points, well ahead of Chelsea's Didier Drogba with 90 and Bolton's Austin 'Jay Jay' Okocha, with 63. Eto'o was unable to attend the ceremony in Durban, South Africa, because of his commitments with the 'Football for Hope' benefit match and Barca's upcoming clashes against Mallorca and Chelsea. He was represented in the ceremony by his lawyer, Jose María Mesalles, his partner and other members of his family.
Celebration in the Nou Camp
Samuel Eto'o will have the chance to celebrate the award with the fans in the Nou Camp on Saturday before the league match against his former club Mallorca. Eto'o was still a Mallorca player when he won the award for 2003.
The election process
Eto'o was chosen from a shortlist of five players drawn up by CAF: Eto'o, Emmanuel Adebayor (Monaco), Didier Drogba (Chelsea), Benedict McCarthy (FC Porto) and Austin 'Jay Jay' Okocha (Bolton). In January, the 53 federations reduced the shortlist to just three finalists: Eto'o, Drogba and Okocha. Each federation then awarded five points for their first choice, four points for their second choice and three for their third choice.
