I haven't been subjected to racist insults for a long time now, but I still hear reports of racist violence occurring in New Zealand. It's not as bad as most other countries, and has improved considerably over the last 8-10 years, but it's still there. There was a report on a current affairs show here around a month ago where they interviewed a right-wing group in Christchurch who had perpetrated violence towards Asian students in the city. That being said, it's been a long time since people have assumed my dad owns a dairy(corner shop)/drives a cab and that I eat curry every day. All in all New Zealand is a pretty tolerant country and you have to be in a really ****ty neighbourhood(or Christchurch) to be subjected to blatant racist abuse. People allege that racism in the workplace still exists, and perhaps it does, but seeing as I'm not in the workforce I can't tell.
As far as India goes, it's as a result of our cosmopolitan history that we continue to be fairly tolerant of other races and belief systems. You may have read about communal violence erupting over the last few years, but that is a consequence of politicians using religion as a means of dividing and ruling people, and hindu-muslim tensions have increased since the Kashmir conflict began. Overall, it is still a safe place for everyone, and most people are very tolerant and welcoming. That's my opinion anyway.
