History:

The first 100 years of Bayern Munich's history - and its success story - begin and end with the name Franz. Is it just a coincidence that the leader of the eleven spirited rebels who met to form FC Bayern in the Gisela Restaurant in Munich on the night of 27th February 1900, was a certain Franz John? Or that it was a Franz who masterminded the split from MTV 1879, the original club, which had suppressed every attempt by the footballers at independence? Is it only chance that exactly a century later, another Franz, this time Beckenbauer, would lead Bayern Munich, now an experienced and visionary club with countless titles to its name, into the new millennium as its president?

Much time and many other differences separate now from then. Franz John co-founded and built Bayern up from nothing and was delighted with relatively modest results, like Bayern's 7-1 victory in their first match against their former team, MTV 1879. But John also gave this 'cavalier' club its first individual touch.

In the early days, people recognised Bayern, then known as Schwabinger Bayern, by the players' straw hats. In his turn, Franz Beckenbauer would help make Bayern Munich what it is today: an international club with millions of fans, an institution reaching way beyond German football.

Not in his wildest dreams could Franz John have imagined that future, or that his team would one day be German champions, European Cup Champions and even World Club Championship winners. Nor could he have imagined that nearly a century later, on a mild spring day in 1999, Beckenbauer would meet the world's leading heads of state, and no less than the British prime minister, Tony Blair, would whisper to him that he was the most famous person there.

Clearly something incredible happened in the 100 years between Franz and Franz.

Bayern opened the new millennium in spectacular fashion, claiming the Champions League, the domestic championship, the World Club Cup and the German Cup in quick succession.

Bayern ended the old millennium on a low note with the devastating defeat to Manchester United in the 1999 Champions League final, but the team built around Oliver Kahn, Stefan Effenberg and Giovane Elber swiftly set about making amends in the new century.

Long-standing rivals Real Madrid felt the effects of Bayern's determination early in the year 2000 as the Reds put no less than eight goals past the Spanish giants in the space of eight days, winning 4-2 at the Bernabeu and 4-1 at home. The sides met again in the semi-finals, but this time Real took revenge, winning the tie with a 2-0 success at home and a crucial away goal in Munich's 2-1 win at the Olympic Stadium.

Ottmar Hitzfeld's men still collected silverware that season, entering the last week of the Bundesliga campaign neck-and-neck with Bayer Leverkusen. The Rhineland outfit fell to a shock defeat against relegated Unterhaching, allowing Bayern to pip them to the title. A week later, the Reds took revenge for the previous year's German Cup final defeat to Werder Bremen with a 3-0 win against the same opponents in the Berlin showpiece, sealing the third league and cup double in the club's history. Oliver Kahn was named German Player of the Year 1999-2000.

There was even better to come in 2000-2001. The omens were not good after an early German Cup exit to unfancied Magdeburg, but after 34 Bundesliga matches, Bayern again finished top of the standings. And again the glory was earned in dramatic fashion as Patrik Andersson blasted a stoppage-time equaliser in Hamburg with almost the last kick of the last match, snatching the title from rivals Schalke 04, whose game had already finished. The Schalke fans had celebrated - for just four minutes.

Brimming with confidence after the knife-edge finale, the Reds travelled to Milan on 23 May 2001 for the Champions League final against Valencia. Bayern had been on a European revenge mission all season, knocking out Manchester United in the quarter-finals and then seeing off Madrid with a 1-0 away win and a 2-1 success at home. Olli Kahn was the hero of that unforgettable night in Milan, saving three penalties in the shoot-out after the match had finished 1-1 after extra time to seal Munich's fourth European Champions Cup title, a quarter of a century after a the previous success.

Klinsmann declared that he will do everything in his power to make Podolski feel at home with our club. No mention of Schweinsteiger.

I think he didn't mention him couse he already considers him settled. Podolski has been moaning toward a possible move to Koln so it is more than normal to try to make him feel wanted. I also read that his majesty King Schummi being a Koln fan is trying to help Poldi transfer there. Madness.

Cologne would have to come up with a LOT of money. I guarantee that Podolski isn't going to take a pay cut. He'd have to cut back on his decadent playboy lifestyle, and that isn't going to happen, especially after his great Euro 2008.

Check out the new training facility.

It cost 18,5 million euros so there's where our money went this summer.

It look's like something out of an Ikea catalog. Very impressive.

If Podolski still has trouble to 'settle' in with these facilities, and given that it is now his third season at Bayern, then possibly his heart is only for one club -and as a result, should head home.

Kroos should be getting 10.

Anyways here is Kroos's whole interview:

fcbayern.de: Toni, how much has your life changed in the last 12 or so months?
Toni Kroos: “There have certainly been a few changes. A year ago, I’d just completed a season in the U-19s, when I learnt I’d be spending pre-season with the first team. I’d trained with the seniors a couple of times. The coach told me I was capable of holding my own and that I’d get to play sometimes. It all happened very fast after that.“

fcbayern.de: Before your first game with the seniors, you had a fantastic U-17 World Cup.
Kroos: “Yes indeed. It wasn’t a bad tournament for me. It certainly helped me along the way, because it attracted a lot of attention. Then we had the game in Belgrade and my first matches in the Bundesliga – and suddenly I was basically a member of Ottmar Hitzfeld’s squad.“

fcbayern.de: With the benefit of hindsight, your career really took off before Christmas last term. How would you rate the rest of the campaign?
Kroos: “It was more or less the same in terms of playing time, but there may not have been the same great leaps forward. You could say the second half of the season was a stabilisation period. I finished with a total of 20 competitive appearances, which is certainly pretty special in your first year as a professional, especially here at Bayern.“

fcbayern.de: What are your targets for your second season with the seniors?
Kroos: “My target has to be making more appearances, that’s only logical. I haven’t arrived where I want to be yet. I want to become a first team regular at Bayern in the near future. It’s very competitive here and it won’t be easy, but I’m convinced I’m capable of playing plenty of games, certainly in terms of footballing ability.“

fcbayern.de: In what position?
Kroos: “(laughs)… obviously in my favourite position, which is central attacking midfield. I think that’s where I best play to my strengths. But at Bayern Munich you don’t go around insisting on a particular position, you’re just glad when you make the team. All I can do is get stuck in every time we train. At the end of the day, the coaching staff take the decisions.“

fcbayern.de: How would you assess your strengths and weaknesses?
Kroos: “I would say my strengths are shooting, set plays, passing and dribbling. I could definitely improve my heading and my defensive play. But we’re working on those right now.“

fcbayern.de: What’s your view of the early days with Jürgen Klinsmann and his team?
Kroos: “I think it’s going really well. Training is very intense with two sessions a day, and we’re spending the time from nine in the morning until six in the evening together. It’s definitely something new, but I have to say it’s been a lot of fun so far.“

fcbayern.de: You lived in the youth academy up until a couple of weeks ago, but you’ve now moved to your own apartment, and you’ve also passed your driving test. What’s it like now you’re looking after yourself?
Kroos: “I only have to worry about food in the evenings at the moment, because we’re eating the other meals together in the performance centre. I’m also having my laundry done, but otherwise I reckon living alone has its advantages. I still need a sat nav system when I’m driving, otherwise I’d never find my way around Munich.“

fcbayern.de: You have a 17-year-old younger brother Felix. Do you think you’ll ever end up in a professional team with him?
Kroos: “It’s a good question. I think Felix will stay in Rostock for a while, as he’s just been invited to train with the Hansa first team. Obviously, I’d love to play alongside him again at some point. Let’s see if our paths cross again sometime in the future.“

fcbayern.de: You’ve not appeared for Germany since the U-17 World Cup. Why?
Kroos: “We made an agreement that I should spend a year totally focused on Bayern. That’s nearly up now. We’ll see if the association still has any plans for me and whether I’m called up.“

fcbayern.de: Ottmar Hitzfeld said you could become a full international one day.
Kroos: “I’m really not thinking about that at all right now. My priority is to earn a place in the Bayern team. And then I’d echo Michael Rensing, who recently said: if you become a regular here and deliver the goods, the rest follows automatically.“

Yep he keept his old number. Number 10 is already taken by Kroos. he ain't letting that go. :D

Seems like Ribery will be out for another 2 months. A pitty really. lets hope he is ready for the CL.

Also we are playing a friendly with Inter Milan. Should be a good game.

Yes, the friendly against Inter should be a great match. Last year's pre-season friendly against Barca wasn't the best spectacle.

It is a shame about Ribery, but seriously, if there was the perfect time to be injured it would be now. He'll be right for the 'business-end of the season'.

Also, I like Bayern's dark navy away strip. Very nice.

I actually loved the white one. Classy, should fit the lads qite well.
So seems like the only signings that have a certain weight will be Borowski and Butt lol. Oh dear back to being cheap huh?

Well i am loving those training facilities so i ain't complaining about. Let's see how rensing pans out. If not we must go after Adler or better Neuer.

It's always nice to see some bright new summer-signings, but we can't complain after swooping Frank, Luca and Miroslav last season. Borowski is a good get, and we are still the best team in Germany by quite a way, and possibly a team that can make the semi's in the CL.

Although, I firmly believe, even though Rensing and Butt are great keepers in their own right, we are still going to miss Kahn so badly (especially in the CL).
