Ferdinand transfer request turned down

London - Leeds United defender Rio Ferdinand made an official transfer request on Wednesday, but it was immediately turned down by the Premier League club.

"I can confirm that Rio Ferdinand has asked for a transfer," the club's chairman Peter Ridsdale told the Leeds website. "This request has been rejected.

"Secondly, no bid worthy of consideration has been received from any football club for Rio.

"Rio has four years remaining on his current contract and I expect him to respect that contractual obligation."

Manchester United want to prise Ferdinand, the £30-million-rated (about R470m) England international, away from Elland Road.
