Field size? MLS, specifically.

Is there no 'standard' field size that the league enforces? I'm watching my Revolution play in San Diego, and they're talking about how the field is small. They don't usually mention other fields being small.

Why is this?

There is a field size, that was one of the mainreasons Rochester couldn't play in the MLS earlier because they played in a baseball stasium and the field wasn't big enough. Now with the SSS we're completing.

Also the game was in San Jose not San Diego.

I always confuse those two places.. :nape:

Is it a certain demension, or a range of values?

yea there is certain numbers I don't know exactly what they are, let me check the MLS site to see if i can find the rules.

Here they are:

Simply put, the field must be a clearly delineated rectangle, with the sidelines longer than the length of the goal line. The exact measurements of the field may vary somewhat, however. The fields must be between 100 and 130 yards long (90-120 meters) and between 50 and 100 yards wide (45-90 meters).

I watched the same game, and noticed 2 yards after the sideline the stands start, i'd hate to be on a full sprint and crash in to it. ouch.

Back in the old days there was barely any space in between the sideline and the advertising boards, players knocked into them all the time.

I'm not sure, but when the Crew played at Ohio Stadium, I think the field was actually narrower than the one at Spartan Stadium. The players used to say it was like playing on a bowling alley. At least it had some clearance around it, though. Somebody is gonna seriously get hurt in San Jose, one of these days.

hmm aren't these limits too high? I mean a difference between 45 and 90 meters is huge, it's 2x longer distance to run or pass

so if there would be a team with the smallest possible stadium and they would play with Barcelona or other team with big pitch it would be handicap for them, it's almost like switching from football to futsal

the other side is if home team with small pitch would play away on huge pitch they'd be tried to death after first half of play

I always thought that in proffesional leagues there's tighter limit like eg. maximum 5-10 m of difference between stadiums sizes

Yea same here i mean 50-100 yards is a big difference it should be more close than that.
